A freshman quarterback and a pair or senior stalwarts, plus a stingy defense led Washington to a season opening victory over CCS last Thursday night.

The game was moved from Friday due to the Oklahoma Sooners playing on a rare Friday night.

When the dust settled, Washington won its 31st game in a row to the tune of 46-3.

Freshman signal caller Creed Barrett tossed touchdown passes of 25, 46 and 20 yards to Ohio State commit tight end Nate Roberts and Hudson Howard scored on runs of 53, 65 and one.

Junior quarterback Kinser Scott scored the other Warrior touchdown.

“In the first game of the season we relied on the veteran players,” head coach Brad Beller said.

“On the offensive side, Nate Roberts had four receptions for 94 yards and three touchdowns and Mason Singletary had four receptions for 55 yards. Mr. reliable Hudson Howard had eight carries for 160 yards and three touchdowns.

“He makes the engine go,” Beller confirmed of his senior workhorse.

A new contingent of offensive linemen are working their way into a unit.

Kingston Stringer, Sam Cantrell, Jaxon Byrd, Carson Elliott and Canyon Dowden were good at protecting their freshman quarterback, the coach said.

“They are working on their continuity,” Beller said.

On the defensive side of the ball, the coach praised the play of junior Lane Taylor.

“He really anchored the defensive line,” Beller said. “He and Kane Lampkin did a really good job of containing the run.

“Kash Guthmueller and all of our linebackers were all beneficiaries of the line doing their job.”

Guthmueller led the tackling chart with 11 stops followed by Riley Gay with nine, Blake Heiliger with eight, Case Alexander and Kale Brakefield with seven and Lane Taylor with six.

Brakefield had an interception while Taylor and Lampkin both registered a quarterback sack.

Up next for the No. 1 ranked Warriors are the Sulphur Bulldogs.

That game will kickoff at 7 p.m. Friday night at Reed Field.

The Bulldogs operate out of a 4-3 defense and have a one back and two back set on offense.

“They will look to throw more than in years past,”  Beller said.

Long-time Sulphur assistant coach Cory Cole has taken over as the Bulldog head coach.

Warrior notes:

Coach Brad Beller nominated Lane Taylor as the Defensive Lineman of the Week. Taylor registered six tackles and one sack against CCS.

Nominated as the Offensive Lineman of the Week was Kingston Stringer, who graded out at 78 percent.

The Defensive Player of the Week nominee was Kash Guthmueller with 11 tackles.

Nominated as the Offensive Player of the Week was Hudson Howard, who rushed eight times for 160 yards and scored three touchdowns.
