Asbestos removal part of the plan

Purcell City Manager Sam Demel reported at the regular City Council meeting that a contractor award for demolition of the old Purcell Municipal Hospital could come by the end of the month or as late as mid-October.

The city received a grant for removal of the asbestos in the facility and the plan is for asbestos removal to begin when the demolition begins.

The asbestos removal will begin at one end of the building with demolition starting at the other end.

Demel expects the demolition to be completed by no later than the end of the year.

At its meeting September 3, the Purcell Public Works Authority voted to award Techline a contract for the Green Avenue Lighting material in the amount of $69,233.50.

The trustees declared 16 lamp posts for the electric department as surplus property

They also heard the quarterly report from Wadley’s EMS.

In a special meeting Monday night at the Community Room of the Purcell Police Service Building, the council approved emergency repairs for well No. 15 in the well field near Lexington in the amount of $30,107.50.

“Due to electrical damage at the City’s Well Field, the city of Purcell has moved outdoors watering to Tier 2 water conservation measures,” Demel said.

The council approved the appointment of an advisory committee for the Freedom Crossing Project.

Those on the committee are  Allen Eubanks (Chairman), Jay Tate and Sam Demel. Greg Wheat will be an alternate in the absence of Eubanks or Tate. Also, department heads will be called as needed.

The council also initiated the process of employment of Paul Barrett as city treasurer with the looming retirement of Victor Lohn.
