Washington unleashed a smothering defense and a balanced offensive attack last Thursday night at Casady to blow away the Cyclones 55-10.
The stifling Warrior defenders held Casady to eight yards rushing on 17 carries and limited them to 37 yards through the air while picking off a pair of passes.
Jaxon McKinney came up with both interceptions while Nate Steele recovered a fumble.
“I was proud of our defensive line for creating a lot of pressure on them,” head coach Brad Beller said of Hunter Sanders, Dom Palumbo and Kai Palacol. “They threw it 22 times and our defensive backs had their best coverage game of the season,” Beller said about the work of Charlie Mann, Jaxon McKinney, Rhett Dickerson, Bo Beard and Kade Babcock.
“They swarmed ‘em,” Beller said. “They didn’t let their receivers breath.
“No one player had a stat line that would jump off the paper at you but we were disruptive,” the coach confirmed. “We got their quarterback off his spot.”
Case Alexander led the tackling chart with six stops followed by Jack Stinnett with five Jaaron Gordon with four and Dom Palumbo with four tackles, one for a loss and had a quarterback sack.
On the offensive side of the ball, Washington was just that - offensive.
The Warriors rushed for 320 yards and five touchdowns and passed for another 251 yards and three more scores.
Creed Barrett led the scoring parade throwing touchdown passes to Case Alexander, for nine yards, Jett Holland on a 37 yarder and a 60-yard bomb to Jackson Mays.
Barrett also rushed for 60 yards and scored on a 33 yard scamper in the first quarter.
Jaxon McKinney got in on the scoring action finding the end zone on an 18-yard run in the second period.
Josiah Dickerson, who rushed for 71 total yards, scored on a 10-yard effort in the third quarter and Henry Mann hit pay dirt on the end of a 40-yard third quarter run.
Freshman Sammy Salcedo closed out the Washington scoring in the fourth quarter on a 10 yard jaunt.
“We had four ball carriers rush for 50 or more yards,” Beller noted.
In addition to Dickerson’s 71, McKinney rushed for 68, Henry Mann for 50 and Barrett for 60 yards.
“We wanted to establish the run and our statistics show the line created a lot of seems and gaps for our guys to run. When you open up the run game like that the play action and RPOs really open up.”
And that was due to the efforts up front by Trip Wilson, Evan Painter, Adam Sharp, Joseph Oakley and Jackson Glover.
Barrett spread the ball around, hitting seven different receivers.
Up next is the Anadarko Warriors. Kick off tonight (Thursday) is set for 7 p.m. at Reed Field.
Anadarko, who is 3-3 on the season, runs a pro-style offense base out of a 4-2-5 defense.
Beller said they have five in the defensive backfield so they can make easier adjustments to different formations they face.
“The key for us is to control the front line,” Beller said. “They are huge with not a single lineman under 240 to 250 pounds. They are big and strong and move you off the ball. We will have to use our speed on both sides of the ball and get our athletes out in space. Our number one goal is to get their running back on the ground when we are on defense.”
Warrior notes:
Head coach Brad Beller nominated Creed Barrett as the Offensive Player of the Week. Barrett threw for three touchdowns completing 10 of 16 attempts for 251 yards and ran for 60 yards and a touchdown.
Beller nominated Trip Wilson as the Offensive Lineman of the Week. He graded out at 86 percent against Casady.
The Defensive Player of the Week nomination went to Jaxon McKinney who had two tackles and two interceptions against Casady.
Dom Palumbo was the nominee for Defensive Lineman of the Week with four tackles, one for a loss and had one quarterback sack.
