Purcell struck like a lightning bolt last Friday night at North Rock Creek when Cash Cook returned the opening kick off 80 yards for a touchdown.
However, the Cougars knotted the score at 7-all later in the first period and went on to post a 38-14 victory over the Dragons.
Cook finished the night with 218 all purpose yards.
Cooper Selman was credited with the other Purcell touchdown, a 45-yard punt return in the third period.
The Dragon offense managed to gain 194 yards rushing and another 90 through the air but had three passes picked off and coughed up a fumble in the Red Zone with the game still knotted at 7-7.
“Our defense had stretches where we played really well,” head coach Aaron Dillard said. “But in the second half they wore us down with the offense unable to keep the ball and the defense out there a lot.”
Tack on 15 penalties and it was hard to sustain drives.
Purcell will host the Oklahoma Christian Saints tonight Thursday at 7 p.m.
“The Saints are coming off a couple of tough losses but are still a good football team,”
Dillard reports. “They were a semifinal team last year in 2A and they still got a lot of talent.
“They are explosive on offense and like to throw the ball around,” Dillard continued. “Their defense is based out of an odd front. They are aggressive and stunt a lot. It’ll be a good test for us for sure.”
Dillard said his team needs to limit OCS’s explosive plays when they are on defense.
“We need to finish drives, keep the ball off the ground and reduce the penalties,” he confirmed.
