Warriors come to town Friday for district contest

Purcell’s Dragons are looking to get back on track this Friday night when they play host to the Anadarko Warriors.

Kick off at Conger Field Friday night is set for 7 p.m.

The Warriors operate out of a pro-style offense.

“They run a lot of tight end sets,” Purcell Head Coach Aaron Dillard said. “They try to run down hill at you and then take some deep shots. They basically want to run right down your throat.”

At 4-1, the Warriors are a good, solid football team.

“They run an even man front on defense,” Dillard said of the 4-2 alignment.

“They’re very good on defense. They are physical and very athletic. They make you work,” Dillard confirmed.

The coach said the key will be for the Dragons to win on first down.

“If we can keep them in second and third and long we will be alright,” Dillard said. “But if we give up big chunks on first down it could be tough. We’ve also got to cut down on our errors.”

Two key fumbles and 12 penalties really hampered Purcell in their 26-13 loss at Kingfisher last Friday night.

“Offensively, we continue to put together long drives,” the coach said. “Kingfisher was really a good ball game other than the two fumbles and 12 penalties that kinda’ got in our way.”

The Dragons actually led at halftime, 7-6.

One of the fumbles came on the Kingfisher 15 yard line when the Dragons were driving for a possible touchdown.

At one point Purcell had Kingfisher backed up to a third and 17 on their own seven yard line when they threw an incomplete pass.

But instead of forcing the Yellowjackets to punt from deep in their own territory, a roughing the passer penalty bailed them out.

“After a couple of penalties and a couple of turnovers we’re down two scores,” Dillard said.

Dillard praised the play of quarterback Deaken Dobbins, who passed for 98 yards and touchdown and rushed for 31 yards and another touchdown.

“He had a pretty good game,” the coach confirmed. “We asked him to do a lot of things. He did a good job of driving the bus so to speak.

“And Landry Bacon graded out over 80 percent which is impressive because Kingfisher is a good football team especially up front,” Dillard said.

The coach also had words of praise for the play of cornerbacks Bodie Meyer and Oscar Wren.

“They both had tremendous games limiting their explosive plays,” Dillard said.

Devan Martin toed the extra point after Dobbins score. It was Meyer that hauled in the 10-yard scoring strike off the arm of Dobbins but a try for two was unsuccessful.

Dragon notes:

Purcell Dragon head coach Aaron Dillard nominated Deaken Dobbins as the Offensive Player of the Week. Dobbins passed for a touchdown and rushed for another against Kingfisher.

Nominated as the Defensive Player of the Week was Christian Kirk who made eight tackles and blocked a kick.

Nominated as the Offensive Lineman of the Week was Landry Bacon who graded out at 82 percent against Kingfisher.

There was no nomination in the defensive line.
