Wayne eyes Velma

Thursday game scheduled for District clash

Wayne travels to Velma tonight (Thursday) for a District showdown against the Comets at 7 p.m.

Velma, 3-2 on the season, will operate out of multiple formations on offense but really have one thing on their mind. Rush the football.

“They’ll run their tailback and their quarterback,” head coach Brandon Sharp said. “They are really talented and can get it.”

Velma has the luxury of only one lineman having to play both ways.

“They’re big and physical on the offensive line and they’ll be well rested,” Sharp said. “Their wide receivers do a good job of blocking out on the edge too.”

Defensively, Velma bases in a 4-4 front.

“They move their front around a lot and the defensive linemen slant,” Sharp said. “They want to bring pressure and it’s going to be a challenge. We need to go compete and get to the fourth quarter and have a chance to do something.”

Wilson

Wayne was defeated 31-6 by Wilson Friday night.

Wilson got on the board twice in the first quarter before scoring again with one second to go in the first half.

Wayne struggled with self-inflicted errors and their offense suffered.

“We penalized ourselves so many times,” Sharp said. “We couldn’t get out of our own way.”

Wayne had eight false starts.

The Bulldogs found the end zone in the second half when Jaxon Dill hit Max McGlory on a 40-yard pass.

Defensively, Wayne wasn’t able to get stops when they needed to.

“They didn’t show anything we didn’t expect,” Sharp said. “They ran the same plays we repped out in practice. We made mistakes and really played bad.”

Ryli Taylor was a bright spot on the defense. The sophomore registered 13 tackles and had a sack.

Adolfo Vazquez had 12 tackles at his defensive end spot and Brandon Logston had five tackles and a fumble recovery.

“Those three dudes played well for us on defense,” Sharp said. “We moved Ryli to linebacker and he had a good game. We’re making a few moves and we’ll get some other guys some opportunities.”

Notes

Wayne head coach Brandon Sharp nominated Ryli Taylor for Heart of Oklahoma Defensive Player of the Week.

His nominee for Defensive Lineman of the Week was Adolfo Vazquez.
