Are self-driving cars legal in Oklahoma?

Posted

Yes.

Oklahoma has a law that explicitly legalizes self-driving cars.

Senate Bill 1541, which took effect in November 2022, allows fully autonomous vehicles to operate without a human driver, provided the owner files a law enforcement interaction plan and proof of financial responsibility (which satisfies the compulsory insurance law) with the Department of Public Safety beforehand.

Elevation Proving Ground, an electric vehicle staffing service, reported in July 2026, using data from the National Conference of State Legislatures, that autonomous driving was fully legal in 21 states. An additional 11 states allowed testing or limited pilot programs. Meanwhile, a few states and regions, such as New York, had imposed explicit safety requirements and restrictions.

While the remaining states lack legislation on self-driving cars, they do not ban them, creating a legal gray area.

State legality often differs between passenger and commercial vehicles, with additional regulations imposed on the latter.
