Wayne will have their Pink Out game tonight (Thursday)when they face off with Velma-Alma at 7 p.m.
It will be another key District game for the Bulldogs in the highly competitive District A-II-2.
Wayne head coach Brandon Sharp said they are an impressive team.
“They’re another good team,” he said. “Our District is stout this year.”
Velma, with a 2-3 record this season, took Ringling to the wire last week.
“They are a talented bunch and a senior-heavy team,” Sharp said.
Velma will line up in the I-Formation on offense and run the ball right at the defense.
“They’ll be in power I-Formation and their quarterback does a great job on the option,” Sharp said. “We’ll have to play in our gaps and keep him contained.”
The Velma quarterback is No. 10 Slade Strickland. The senior signal caller can also throw the ball.
No. 15 Maddox Riffe is one of his favorite targets.
Defensively, the Comets will line up in a 4-4. They are led by No. 13 Ryker Sanner.
“He is one of the best linebackers I’ve seen at this level in a while,” Sharp said. He’s the real deal.”
Sharp said Velma will be physical up front on both sides of the ball.
“It will be a tough challenge for us and we’ll have to play well,” Sharp said. “Hopefully we’ll come ready to play and show people we’re better than what we showed last week.”
Wilson
The Wilso game did not go as planned for the Bulldogs in the 50-6 final.
“It was kind of a weird game and we just didn’t respond well,” Sharp said. “They hit us in the mouth early and often and once we got down there was no fight, which was disappointing. This group usually fights to the end.”
Wilson scored twice in the first quarter and four times in the second and the game was essentially over by halftime.
“I didn’t do a good job of putting them in situations to be successful,” Sharp said. “It was one of those games where we got down early and couldn’t get anything going. We’ll battle and get back at it this week. Hopefully the kids respond.”
Wayne’s only score came on a 17-yard run from Eli Stottlemyre in the fourth quarter on a busted play.
Wayne is 1-4 this season.
