Wayne goes to Wynnewood

Posted

Wayne will close out the 2023 season at Wynnewood this Friday.

Wynnewood is 2-7 this year but the Savages have multiple athletes who can go the distance any time the ball is in their hands.

One of them is Vanderbilt University commit Caden Knighten, who plays running back.

“They have a lot of speed and they are dangerous,” Wayne head coach Brandon Sharp said. “They’re like us and are a little banged up but they have good players.”

Offensively, Wynnewood is run first.

“They’ll line up in multiple formations but they want to run the ball,” Sharp said. “Their quarterback is good and the tailback is extremely athletic. We’ll have to play sound defense and not get out of position.”

On defense the Savages will line up in a 3-4 front. They like to slant their defensive linemen and run man-to-man defense in the secondary.

“Their linebackers run to the ball well and they’ll load up the box to stop the run,” Sharp said. “They’ll try to stop the run first and make you throw it.”

With the Bulldogs being mathematically eliminated from the playoffs this will be the last outing for the 2023 edition on Wayne football.

“Hopefully the kids will go out and play well and give these seniors a win to go out on,” Sharp said.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Dibble

Wayne lost to Dibble 53-0 last week.

Dibble, 7-2 this season, capitalized on turnovers and the game snowballed quickly.

“They are a really talented football team and we just didn’t have an answer,” Sharp said. “Our young guys who will be playing next year have to learn to not make mistakes.”
