Losses to Barnsdall and Elmore City knocks out Bulldogs

The Wayne Bulldogs were in Arapaho for Regionals last Thursday where they lost two games to end their season. They lost 11-0 to Barnsdall then a close 7-6 loss to Elmore City.

“Barnsdall got up on us early and we had a couple errors that didn’t help us out at all,” head coach Shane Collins said.

“But the Elmore game was back and forth. We had a chance to win the game in extra innings, but the errors came back to bite us.”

The Bulldogs finished that game with nine hits and nine errors.

Senior Ty Kemp led the team with three hits and an RBI. Ben Fisher had two hits.

Wayne got on the board first when Kemp singled to score two runs in the top of the second inning.

Elmore City answered back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Wayne tied it up when Sloan Jackson tripled down the right field line to score one.

Then in the seventh inning, Fisher singled to score one and Wayne retook the lead, 4-3.

Elmore wasn’t going quietly as they scored one in the bottom of the seventh to once again knot the score, 4-4.

To extra innings they went.

Ty Kemp doubled to score the go-ahead run and Lane Canfield grounded out to add an insurance run, 6-4.

The Bulldogs needed just three outs.

But, Elmore scored three runs to walk it off.

“We reverted back to our old ways with lots of errors. Jaxon pitched great for us, but his pitch count got up to around 120 and we had to take him out,” Collins said.

Dill was on the mound for six and one-third innings. He allowed four runs on six hits, walked one and struck out three.

Langstyn McClendon came on in relief for one and one third. He walked two and struck out two.

“We had multiple chances to beat Elmore City, but we couldn’t help ourselves out of a bind,” Collins said.

The Bulldogs finished the season with a 12-13 record.

Five seniors will be lost to graduation including Dill, Ty Kemp, Duke Moore, Adolfo Vazquez and Kody Kern.

“This group has been great over the last four years. They always work hard and lead by example in games and practice. We’ll lost 95% of our pitching with Jaxon and Ty so we’ll have to have some younger guys grow up to fill their shoes,” Collins said.
