Warriors win District tourney

The Washington Warrior slow-pitch softball team won the District championship Monday after defeating Western Heights (10-0) and Dickson (15-0 and 15-0).

The Regional softball tournament will be played April 25.

Western Heights

The Warriors powered past Western Heights in a five-inning run rule.

They scored six runs in the second inning and four in the fourth.

The Warriors only had two hits in the game, a double by Julie Hoehner and a triple by Olivia Palumbo.

Washington batters walked eight times.

“We didn’t play too well in that first game,” head coach Tylor Lampkin said. “We didn’t get very amped up.”

The Warriors played error-free in the field and cruised to the win.

Dickson

Washington scored 11 runs in the first inning and added four in the second to take the first game against Dickson, 15-0.

The Warrior bats got going – Emjay Lucas and Shelbie Caveness both doubled while Palumbo tripled.

The Warrior defense was clean in the field again with no errors.

Senior pitcher Alexis Gay put in a strong performance at pitcher to help her team.

“Alexis does a great job,” Lampkin said. “She mixes it high and low and gets us ground balls and weak pop-up flies. I was proud of her.”

In the finals against Dickson, the Warriors separated with a nine-run second inning before claiming the title.

Ava Grimes and Daphne Palumbo each had doubles.

Lucas and Ava Salcedo both homered, with Lucas sending it out of the yard not once, but twice.

She finished with three RBIs.

“We have over 100 home runs this year (as a team). No one thought we’d be anywhere close to that after we graduated the kids we did.” Lampkin said. But we have 16 kids with at least one home run. That just shows the depth we have and all our power.”

The Warriors showed some of their depth off in the game and played a lot of players from their deep bench.

“We got to move some kids around yesterday,” Lampkin said. “We’ve had some ups and downs this year but we’re slowly piecing it together and figuring things out.”

The Warriors, now 27-7, play at Mustang today (Thursday).

They will learn their Regional assignment on Monday.

“We’ll have to play some good ball to get a berth to the State tournament,” Lampkin said.
