Last District games are a double header at home

The Washington Warriors play a double header against Casady today (Thursday) in what could decide the District 3A-2 champion.

Washington’s District record stands at 9-1.

The District champion will enjoy home field advantage for the Regional tournament.

“It’s a big double header Thursday,” Warrior head coach Brad Lucas said.

Lindsay

The Warriors’ only District blemish came on a 5-4 loss to Lindsay last week.

Washington was cruising with a 3-0 lead through five innings but hit turbulence in the sixth inning.

Lindsay loaded the bases to start the inning and capitalized big with a five-run inning.

Washington added one more run in the seventh inning but wasn’t able to even the score back out.

Owen Andrews struck out seven batters and lasted 5 1/3 innings before LD Vinzant came on in relief.

Andrews was 2-2 with a double and an RBI at the plate.

Kinser Scott had a pair of RBIs.

Woodward

Washington opened the Duncan Festival with a 1-0 win over Woodward.

Jonathen Montoya struck out 10 batters in a solid outing on the mound in seven innings.

Liam Keltner closed out the final inning.

Vinzant singled to score Jackson Rico in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the win.

Calumet

Washington fell to Class B No. 2 Calumet 1-0 in the next game.

“They are a really good ball club,” Lucas said. “It was a good baseball game and we just did not come up with the big hit in that one.”

Vinzant had a great day on the mound, recording eight strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings of work.

Spencer Barton finished out the last 1 2/3 innings.

“LD threw really well,” Lucas said.

Behind them, the Warrior defense played well with a lone error.

Rico was 2-3 at the plate.

Washington had just five hits as a team and there were nine total hits in the pitchers duel.

Calumet scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Sterling

Washington defeated Sterling 3-2 on Saturday at the festival.

Rico was solid on the mound, striking out six batters.

Keltner closed out the last inning and struck out the side.

“Rico threw really well and it was another good ball game,” Lucas said.

Washington again limited errors, committing just one.

Washington scored one run in the first, third and seventh innings.

Sterling scored their run in the top of the seventh inning.

Koen Scarborough was 2-3 at the plate and had an RBI.

Am-Po

Washington fell to Am-Po 5-1 on Monday.

The Panthers scored four runs in the third in what would prove to bet the ball game.

“They came up with three timely hits with two hits with runners on,” Lucas said. “That was the difference.”

Jackson Mays struck out four batters over four innings.

Barton and Andrews had the ball over the last three innings.

Washington’s run came courtesy of the bat of Mayson Thomas when he homered in the fifth inning.

Lucas said his team has played great defense this season.

“We can pitch it and really defend it,” he said. “We need some timely hits right now and it’s coming.”

Washington is 15-9 this season.
