Washington defeated three top teams at the Southern Oklahoma Invitational Festival late last week, bringing their overall season record to 22-5.
“We had a really good week,” head coach Brad Lucas said.
Woodward
The Warriors started the festival with an 11-1 win over Woodward.
“We got after Woodward pretty good,” Lucas said.
Owen Andrews got the start on the mound and struck out nine batters, while walking two and giving up a single hit.
Washington scored a run in the first inning but blew things open in the second inning with six runs.
They scored another in the third and added three more in the fourth.
Woodward pushed their lone run across the plate in the fourth inning.
Jackson Mays was 2-2 with a double and knocked in two runs.
Jack Brady was 2-2 with a walk and had an RBI.
Zeke Wilson was 2-3 with two ribbies.
Calumet
Washington defeated Calumet, 12-1, on Friday.
Spencer Barton struck out four batters over seven innings.
Calumet, the No. 2 team in Class B, scored a run in the first inning and maintained the lead until Washington scored a run in the third to tie the game.
The Warrior defense took over after that and Washington scored four in the fourth, two in the sixth and five in the seventh.
“They are a really good team in Class B,” Lucas said. “It was a good win.”
Mays went 4-5 with a double at the plate.
Liam Keltner, Andrews and Jackson Rico had three hits each and combined for seven RBIs.
Duncan
Washington capped off the weekend with a 12-6, come-from-behind win over Duncan.
Duncan scored four runs in the first inning to take the early lead.
Rico’s two-run homer in the third kept the Warriors close. He was 3-5 at the dish.
Washington added a run in the fifth and then opened up the faucet with a seven-run sixth.
Andrews had a three-run homer in the inning and he finished 2-4 with a walk at the plate.
Yariel Bello had a good day offensively as well, going 3-4 with three RBIs.
Lucas said his team is finding their stride on offense right now.
“They made some really good adjustments,” Lucas said. “They’re buying in to the process of what we do as a team and a program in our hitting.”
Over the course of the three games, Andrews hit over .600, Mays over .500, and Bello, Rico, Keltner and Owen Andrews hit over .400.
“We played really well,” Lucas said.
Tucker Myers, LD Vinzant and Keltner teamed up on the mound, with Vinzant getting credit for the win.
We pitched it and defended it so well during the week,” Lucas said.
Bethel
Washington beat Bethel 9-0 Monday afternoon.
Mays got the win while striking out four batters while allowing two hits.
His defense played error-free baseball behind him.
Keltner was 2-5 at the plate with an RBI.
