The Warrior baseball team improved to 6-0 in Districts after they defeated Anadarko 11-0.
Their District schedule will be more crowded in the coming weeks.
They will also play in the Marlow tournament April 3-5. The bracket is in this week’s issue.
“It will be busy,” head coach Brad Lucas said.
Anadarko
The Warriors picked up another District victory with an 11-0 win over Anadarko last Tuesday.
Kale Brakefield had a solid outing on the mound, striking out 10 batters in five innings while giving up just one hit and three walks.
“We are doing a good job on the mound,” Lucas said. “We need to clean up a little defense.”
The Warriors put one run on the board in the first inning and blew the game open with a six-run second.
Jackson Rico was 3-3 at the plate with a triple and an RBI.
Liam Keltner was 2-3 with three RBIs and a double.
“We have several guys swinging it well right now,” Lucas said. “Kale Brakefield, Jackson Rico, Liam Keltner and Jack Brady are doing a good job.”
Tushka
The Warriors fell to Tushka 8-3 in the first game of the Sulphur Festival.
Tushka controlled the game beginning in the second inning when they scored five runs. They added three more in the fourth.
“We hit everything right at them,” Lucas said. “Tushka can really swing the bats.”
Keltner and Rico teamed up to plate Washington’s three runs in the fifth inning when Mayson Thomas, Dawson Thomas and Keltner scored. Jonathen Montoya started the game and lasted two innings before Rico came on in relief.
Sulphur
Washington picked up a 4-1 win over Sulphur in the next game.
The Bulldogs got out to a one-run lead in the first inning but Washington answered in the second. They put up two more runs in the third and an insurance run in the sixth.
“We had five hits and they were timely,” Lucas said.
Owen Andrews struck out eight batters in a complete-game performance.
“Owen did a good job for us,” Lucas said.
Brakefield was 1-3 with a walk and two RBIs. He knocked in two in the top of the third inning when he doubled to center field.
Byng
Washington fell to Byng 6-4 on Saturday.
It was a rough start for the Warriors, who allowed four runs in the first inning. The Pirates scored two more in the third and the Warriors were in a 6-0 hole.
Despite only putting up one hit in the game, the Warriors managed to put four runs on the board in the sixth inning.
“They threw a lefty with really good velocity,” Lucas said. “He kept us off balance and was effectively wild.”
They had six walks in the inning and the game’s only hit, by Yadi Bello.
Wilson started on the mound and went 2 2/3 innings before LD Vinzant came on in relief.
“I know we are coming together as a team,” Lucas said. “We’ve been playing hard and it’s just been a little unfortunate in not winning the competitive games. We’ve just come up a little short.”
Washington is 10-6 this season.
