Warriors clinch District title

Posted

The Washington Warriors clinched the 3A-2 District title after two wins over Marietta and another over Lindsay.

They played Marietta in a double header Thursday amid senior night festivities.

They came away with wins of 11-1 and 11-0.

In the first game Nate Roberts took to the bump and delivered.

He struck out nine batters while only walking two batters.

Meanwhile at the plate, Mayson Thomas homered and drove in a pair of runs.

Cam Bates doubled and knocked in a run as well.

Dax McCaskill was hit by pitch during three at bats.

“We played really well in the District wins,” head coach Jeff Kulbeth said. “It gave us an opportunity to go out against Marietta on senior night and give our guys a chance to play who haven’t played much in a varsity game. That was a plus.”

In the second game, sophomore Tristin Babbitt struck out seven batters in four innings.

Reese Stephens went 3-3 at the dish with a double.

Canon Stewart was 1-3 and knocked in a pair of runs.

Lindsay

Washington’s 4-1 win against Lindsay came with major District standing implications.

The Leopards got out to an early lead after they scored one run in the first inning.

Sophomore Marlon Moore got off to a little of a slow start before turning in a solid performance with three strikeouts.

“Marlon was a little amped up early but settled in,” Kulbeth said. “Kade Norman came in and closed out the game in the seventh inning.”

The Warriors were crafty in scoring their four runs.

“We had to short game and run the bases,” Kulbeth said. “Running the bases was the difference for us. Our bunt game and run game helped us.”

Norman did have a triple at the plate.

Upcoming

The Warriors are set to host a bi-District game – possibly against Millwood – next week.

If the Millwood game doesn’t materialize they will play a make-up game with Silo.

But between now and then, the Warriors have one of the tougher stretches of schedule they’ve had all season.

They host Lone Grove today (Thursday).

They then play Class 2A No. 1 Oktaha on Friday and Class 2A No. 4 Hartshorne on Saturday. Both games will be in Hartshorne.

They play Blanchard on Tuesday.

“Hopefully the schedule will get us focused,” Kulbeth said. “We’ll have to pitch it and hit it well. We could be a dangerous ball club.”

Washington is 21-7 this season.
