The host Washington Warrior girls basketball team held off Broken Bow in the finals of the Rocky Clarke Invitational Basketball Tournament to take top honors.
Washington opened the tournament with a 67-21 win over Sulphur.
Preslee Johnson led the Warriors in scoring with 12 points.
Aubri Clary and Breanna Lindert joined her in double figures with 11 points each.
The Washington defense terrorized Sulphur and held the Bulldogs to seven points or less in each quarter.
North Rock Creek
Washington played one of their best games in recent memory during their 60-24 win over North Rock Creek.
“That Warrior team that night can be really good,” head coach Kale Simon said. “We defended well and were active, flying around defensively.”
North Rock Creek, the No. 14 team in Class 4A was held to eight points or less in every quarter.
“We played really well on both ends of the floor,” Simon said. I had a team that was engaged and intentional about who they were.”
Shelbie Caveness and Lindert led the Warriors in scoring with 13 points each.
Johnson added 11 more.
Broken Bow
Washington had to dig deep to find a way to pull off their 57-50 win over Broken Bow in the finals of the tournament.
They got off to a difficult start in the game and found themselves down by nine points at halftime.
“Saturday we came out and had a rough start on both ends of the of the floor in the first half,” Simon said. “In the second half we showed as much resiliency, toughness, grit and character and fight as I’ve seen in a long time. I was proud of who we were in the second half after facing adversity in the first half.”
Washington upped the defensive pressure in the second half and manufactured some steals in the full court.
They were also sparked by a couple big offensive rebounds by Johnson.
Kelby Beller led the charge offensively with 18 points.
Lindert scored 14 and Caveness scored 10.
The Warriors are now 15-1 on the season and ranked No. 1 in Class 3A.
Boys
The Washington boys team finished as tournament runners up after defeating Cache and Broken Bow, but falling to North Rock Creek in the finals.
They put Cache away by a final of 62-59 to open the tournament.
They followed that up with a 67-55 win over 4A’s No. 18 team, Broken Bow, on Friday.
They dropped their championship game to North Rock Creek 77-67.
Washington is 12-4 and ranked No. 9 in Class 3A.
