Washington basketball teams pinned a pair of losses on Marlow February 20 in the District tournament at the Warrior Event Center.

Both teams advance to the winners side of the Regional tournament with the victories.

The girls won 71-32 on a night where they struggled shooting the ball.

“This time of the year, any time you shoot the ball as bad as we shot it and still win it’s a good thing,” head coach Kale Simon. “When you shoot it that bad it exposes areas that need work. That game helped us to fight and to be good in other areas.

Kelby Beller paced the Warriors in scoring with 14 points.

Preslee Johnson (13), Harper Johnson (12), Bentli Brantley (10) and Jayden Wells (10) were also in double figures.

“I was happy with the fact that we kept fighting together as a team and fought to do things right even though the shots weren’t going in,” Simon said.

Washington, now 25-1, were scheduled to play Lindsay in the Regional tournament Tuesday night.

With a win they will play on Saturday at 6 p.m. A loss will have them tipping off Friday at 1 p.m. Either game will be played in Washington.

Boys

The boys defeated Marlow 45-43 in a thrilling finish with Cole Beard completing an and-one in the final seconds of the game.

“It was a battle to the end,” head coach Trevor Smith said. “We knew the winner was going to be whoever had the ball last.”

Marlow led by a point with under a minute to play and were trying to dribble the clock out.

A Warrior steal gave them the ball back.

“Cole got a huge offensive rebound and got the and-one with about two seconds left,” Smith said.

Cole Beard led the way in scoring with 13 points.

Jax Mitchell (11) and Jace Myers (10) were also in double figures.

“A key for us was only having seven turnovers. That was really big for us,” Smith said. “Both teams are really good defensively and we turned them over 25 times.”

Washington is 10-16 this season. They were set to play Lindsay Tuesday night. A win would send them to play Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. A loss has them tipping at 2:30 p.m. Friday. Both games will be in Washington.
