Washington is moving through as Playoffs loom

The Washington Warriors only have one series left in District play as the Class 3A State playoffs near.

They will wrap up Districts against Casady next Thursday.

The team picked up three more District wins over the past week, which saw heavy rains turn schedules on their heads.

Washington defeated Holdenville 14-1 and 11-0 on April Fool’s Day just before the rain moved in.

Holdenville

The Warriors went with junior Spencer Barton on the mound in the 13-1 first game win.

He went five innings, striking out seven and only allowing one hit and one run.

Washington got on the board in the first inning with one run but blew the game wide open in the second with a nine-run effort.

They added three in the third and another in the fourth.

Owen Andrews hit a grand slam in the big second inning.

Jackson Rico went 2-2 with two walks and he scored three times.

Liam Keltner was 2-4 with two RBIs.

In the second Holdenville game, an 11-0 win, Kale Brakefield got the nod as the starting pitcher and struck out nine batters in five innings.

“Spencer and Kale pitched it really well,” said Warrior head coach Brad Lucas.

Offensively, the Warriors struck first with a four-run second inning – and scored a run in both the third and fourth – before slamming the door with a five-run fifth.

Jackson Mays got the scoring going with a two-out double in the top on the second inning when he knocked in Brakefield.

Dawson Thomas followed with another double and traded Mays spots when Mays crossed home plate.

Thomas was 1-2 with a pair of RBIs and a walk.

Lindsay

Washington sealed an 8-1 win over Lindsay Monday.

Lindsay scored a run in the third inning and had the lead until Washington finally got going in the fifth with a three-run post.

Yadi Bello singled to score Rico (who was hit by pitch)  and eventually scored himself off an Andrews double.

Rico was 1-3 with a solo home run.

Mayson Thomas was 2-2 with a walk and three ribbies.

Brakefield and Barton shared the pitching duties. Brakefield went four innings, striking out eight.

Barton closed out the last three innings and struck out five batters.

The Warrior defense was solid in the three games and only had one error.

“We’re playing way better,” Lucas said. “I’m excited to get to Playoff time. We’re coming together and I feel like this group really loves each other.”

Washington is 13-6 this season.
