Washington took second place at the Turnpike Showdown over the weekend, going 4-1.
Their lone loss was to Class 4A No. 3 Silo in the Finals.
Head coach Tylor Lampkin said he likes the improvements his team is making.
“We played okay down there,” he said. “We still have some things to clean up, but overall we’re playing better defense. I’m glad to see that. Our hitting will get there too. It’s not quite there yet.”
On Thursday the Warriors defeated Davis (8-0) and Stonewall (7-3).
Ava Salcedo was 3-3 with a homer, a double and three RBIs against Davis.
Briley Beller was 2-2, drove in a run and tripled.
Julie Hoehner was 2-3 with a home run and three RBIs against Stonewall.
Day 2
Salcedo homered again against Healdton the next day, as did Presley Lucas - who had three RBIs.
Kinzlee Pogue was 3-3 with three doubles and three ribbies.
Hoehner was 2-3 with two doubles and four RBIs.
Kelby Beller was 1-1 with a triple and two RBIs.
“Kelby has been hitting it better,” Lampkin said. “She’s had a really good spring.”
Salcedo had a leadoff home run to begin the Byng game, a 9-5 win.
Daphne Palumbo was 2-2 with three RBIs.
“Daphne has been playing well and Ava just does Ava stuff,” Lampkin said.
Pogue and Emersyn Massey also homered.
Washington then went down 15-5 to Silo in the finals.
“Silo is always one of those teams who does it right,” Lampkin said. “They’re a small-school powerhouse.”
The Warriors got into a hole early, giving up nine runs in the first inning and five more in the second.
As a team the Warriors struggled to hit, totalling just three.
Beller had one of the hits and drove in two runs.
Elgin
Washington came back to defeat Elgin 7-1 on Monday.
Washington scored three in the first inning off the bats of Hoehner – RBI double – and Raelee Adkins – two-run homer.
Lampkin is looking forward to his team’s improvement.
“I definitely like the direction we’re going,” he said.
Washington is 22-4.
