Working to shore up team defense

Washington head coach Tylor Lampkin likes the way his team is hitting the ball at this point in the season.

“We’re finally putting some pieces together hitting-wise,” Lampkin said. “Our offense is taking a lot of pressure off people.”

Little Axe

The Warriors picked up a 9-1 win over Little Axe August 25.

The game was scoreless until the third inning when Washington put four runs on the board.

They scored three more in the fourth.

Their final runs were in the final two innings.

Ava Salcedo went 3-3 at the plate with a double and she scored twice.

Kinzlee Pogue was 2-4 with three RBIs.

Hadley Beard was also 2-4 and had a pair of RBIs.

Isabella Castillo homered on a solo shot in the fourth inning.

Ellie Musgrove struck out two batters in the circle in four innings.

Ally Dennis finished the game, also striking out two.

Marlow

The Warriors beat Marlow 10-0 last Thursday.

They scored three runs in the first inning, starting with Salcedo’s home run.

It was one of two homers for Salcedo as she went 2-4 with two RBIs.

Daphne Palumbo was 2-3 at the plate with a double and a triple.

Pogue was 3-4 and doubled twice.

“Top to bottom they’re swinging it well,” Lampkin said. “Ava is getting going.”

Southmoore

The Warriors defeated Southmoore 10-1 on Monday with all three Warrior pitchers getting in on the action.

“We’re getting all three arms a lot of reps and it’s good because we’re not wearing anyone out,” Lampkin said. “I’m proud of all three because they’re not giving up free things.”

Sophomore closed out the final inning of Monday’s game and had one strikeout.

Pogue and Salcedo both homered and Castillo had two triples and three RBIs.

Bentli Brantley was 3-3 with two triples.

The point of emphasis for the Warriors for the next phase of the season will be improving their defense.

“We need to clean up some defensive things,” Lampkin said. “There’s not much time to practice those things in the middle of the season.”

Washington, now 13-1, will head to the Bixby Festival next Friday - which will boast a competitive field.

“We’ll see Sand Springs, who is a top five team in 6A,” Lampkin said. “And Bartlesville has been in the State tournament in the last few years. It should be a good trip.”
