Field for Washington tournament is full of good competition

The Lady ‘Dawgs dropped a 15-6 loss to Tecumseh last Tuesday. But, turned it around for an extra innings win over Newcastle, 14-13, the same day.

“We’re playing pretty good right now, but we have to learn how to win. We have to overcome. We’re right in the mix.

“The Newcastle win was a grind-it-out kind of win. We knew after the Tecumseh loss that we really had a chance and we had to knock off Newcastle,” head coach Monty Ervin said.

Lex had 11 hits in the loss to the Lady Savages. Brodie Anderson, Kieley Givens, Alie Hollar and Abi Clifton each had two. Izzy Pack, Mackenzie Manuel and Abby Sample had one apiece.

Givens also had three RBIs.

Thanks to four runs in the bottom of the third inning, the game was tied at 5-5 until the sixth.

Tecumseh scored one in the top of the sixth. Then, Alie Hollar answered with a solo home run in the bottom half. Once again, the teams were tied, 6-6.

On their final out in the top of the seventh inning, an error for Lex snowballed to nine unearned runs for Tecumseh to finish the game 15-6.

Despite that, the Lady ‘Dawgs picked themselves up and fought for a 14-13 extra innings win over Newcastle right after.

They had 20 hits in the win. Baylee Rillema led the team with four. Pack, Givens and Brodie Anderson had three.

Lexington finished with 12 RBIs. Anderson, 3-4 at the plate, accounted for five of those.

“We were down early, but the girls dug down and came back to tie it up in the fourth inning,” Ervin said.

The coach said this week is a test for his team. They were hosting Wayne on Tuesday. Then, they were set to host 6A No. 3 Southmoore, 5A No. 4 Cache and an always tough Lindsay team for pool play of the Washington tournament.

Bracket play will be in Washington starting Friday.

“We’re learning about ourselves. The pieces are there and we’re a young group, but if you look across the board, we know our roles and we’re gaining experience with each game,” Ervin said.
