Purcell Head Coach Aaron Dillard sums up Anadarko’s Warriors in two words.
“Way good,” Dillard said. “They have big, physical athletes everywhere. Their quarterback is a move-in from Chickasha and is a dual threat. He runs well and throws well.”
Dillard reports the Warriors like to roll up their sleeves and run right at you.
“They run a lot of power and counters,” he said.
But that’s not all there is to the Warriors’’ offense.
“They have three receivers that are playmakers,” he continued. “They are not as big as Kingfisher but they are fast and are well suited for their power spread offense.”
On defense, Dillard said the Warriors look a lot like his Dragons.
“They run a 4-2-5 very similar to ours,” he confirmed.
“On offense we have to just do what we do,” Dillard said. “Last year we scored a lot of points but eight turnovers were way too many. We’ve got to play a clean game, have productive drives and avoid three and outs.
“Defensively, we have to make it our goal to make them do what they don’t want to do. We need to make them go deep into their play book.”
Kick off is set for 7 p.m. Friday.
Kingfisher
Last Friday night at Conger Field Kingfisher slugged it out with the Dragons eventually topping Purcell, 57-42.
Junior Cooper Selman jump started the Purcell scoring returning a Kingfisher kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown in the opening quarter.
Senior quarterback Deaken Dobbins scored the first of his three rushing touchdowns in the second stanza on a one-yard sneak.
Dobbins scored twice from a yard out in the third period, passed 45 yards to Cash Cook for a touchdown and caught an Oscar Wren pass for a two point conversion.
The conversion came after after a four-yard Liam Cummings touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
“A lot of guys played well offensively,” Dillard said. “Our O-line did a really good job.”
Dillard was speaking of the play of Brian Cazares, Dylan Smith, Kaden Pliler, Halo DiRienzo and Aron Barrera.
“Deaken had a great night throwing, hitting 9 of 10 for 183 yards and a touchdown.”
Junior Paul Glorius was four of five kicking extra points on the night.
“We had a lot of guys carry the ball,” the coach confirmed.
Junior Cash Cook led the rushing chart with 80 yards, Selman picked up 76 yards on the ground and Matt Hall rushed for 52 yards.
Carlos Lara gained 25 yards.
In the receiving department, Cook led the team with 83 yards receiving followed by Glorius with 39 and Lara with 34 yards through the air.
“Oscar Wren and Carter Bennett both had big catches,” Dillard said. “A lot of guys touched the ball.” Purcell finished the night with 441 yards of total offense.
“We made a lot of plays but three turnovers (two fumbles and an interception) hurt. We played a much cleaner game and scored a lot of points off that in the second half,” the coach said.
Dillard said his defense gave up a lot of big plays.
“That trick play they scored on on the second play of the game was a good call,” Dillard said. “They’re good on offense but we gave them a short field off our turnovers.
“We’ve just got to do a better job of tackling and learn to get off the field on third down and long. We’ve got to improve that aspect of our defense. We didn’t quit and played hard. Kingfisher is just way good. Every time we got close they had and answer.”
When the Dragons scored with 3:10 remaining in the contest they had cut the score to a one-score count, 49-42.
Purcell tried to kick onsides and thought they had a chance with two time outs remaining.
However the Yellowjackets recovered the kick, and once again converted on a big third down and seven.
“They went down and got their District points right at the buzzer,” Dillard said. “Our hats are off to them. That was a good play call they dialed up on the trick play and they cashed in.”
