Washington’s boys and girls basketball teams picked up a pair of wins over Pauls Valley and cemented their rankings among the top teams in Class 3A.
The girls defeated the Panthers 58-42.
The Warriors got off to a hot start in the game and led 25-5 after the first quarter.
“We got off to a good start due to attacking as one,” head coach Kale Simon said. “We were simple with our offensive approach with some simple ball movement.”
Breanna Lindert led all scorers with 21 points in the game, continuing her strong play as of late.
“She has been playing really well,” the coach confirmed.
Shelbie Caveness and Preslee Johnson scored nine points each.
“We had great ball and body movement which let us attack the zone,” Simon said.
Simon was also happy with his team’s output on the defensive end of the floor.
“We were playing with some good energy defensively early,” he said. “But we allowed the score to affect our intentionality and focus as the game went on. We allowed it to not be the best it could be.”
With only a couple of weeks until the Playoffs, the coach will continue to push his ball club to get everything out of them.
“We’re still working to be consistent and be a machine in who we are,” We still have higher levels to reach and will work for that standard every day.”
Washington is 16-1 and ranked No. 1 in Class 3A.
Boys
The Warrior boys basketball team picked up a 82-59 win over Pauls Valley in the late game.
They had a strong second half to close out the win.
“We had a slow second quarter and ended up down one at halftime,” head coach Trevor Smith said. “At halftime, we talked about doing the little things every possession. We came out and guarded a lot better and it led to some transition points.”
The Warriors scored 50 points in the second half and it was “fueled by stops” on the defensive end of the floor.
Washington had a three headed monster on the offensive end in Teagen Foster, Jack McKimmey and Cooper Collins. They scored 24, 21 and 18 points respectively.
“It was great to have those three guys playing so well,” Smith said. “Teagen was a bad match up for Pauls Valley that night and McKimmey hit a bunch of shots.”
Washington, now 13-4, finished ranked No. 9 in Class 3A in the final rankings.
“We’re in a good spot heading into the pairings for District.
