Boston Knowles surpassed Gerald Green as the all-time career rushing leader in Purcell Dragon history after he ran for 185 yards against Heritage Hall last Friday night.

Knowles needed just 61 yards to pass Green.

He now holds the record at 4,466 yards and is up to 1,035 yards through nine games this season.

Green’s record of 4,341 had stood for 50 years.

Purcell’s offense was in high gear against the Chargers but as good as the offense was the defense was that porous.

Heritage Hall ended up defeating the Dragons, 56-41. The game was tied at halftime at 28-all thanks to a Purcell fumble into the end zone near the end of the first half.

Purcell rushed for 472 yards against Heritage Hall and passed for another 119 for 591 total offensive yards.

Quarterback Deaken Dobbins was 5-11 in the passing department. Oscar Wren hauled in a pair of Dobbins’ passes for 60 yards while Noel Chavez caught two for 43 yards. Cooper Selman had one reception for 16 yards.

Chavez scored a trio of touchdowns on runs of five, 34 and 10 yards. Knowles found the end zone twice on runs of 45 and one yard and Dobbins scampered in from 34 yards out in the second quarter.

Chavez finished the night with 11 carries for 115 yards while Selman had eight rushes for 112 yards.

“Our offense played really well,” head coach Aaron Dillard said. “We were pretty explosive. It was one of the better offensive games we’ve had since I’ve been here.”

Dillard gave credit to his offensive linemen Carter Thomas, Dylan Smith, Kaden Pliler, Landry Bacon, Brian Bernal and Christian Kirk.

“And our wide receivers did a tremendous job of blocking,” the coach said. “The blocking of Bodie Meyer, Oscar Wren, Ty Clark, Cash Cook allowed our running backs to bust some big runs.

“But as good as our offense was we were that bad on defense. We couldn’t stop them,” Dillard said.

Up next is the final game of the season with a really good Pauls Valley Panther squad.

“They started out the year at No. 4 in Class 3A,” Dillard said. “They’ve battled some injuries and lost some games they shouldn’t have. This is do or die for them in the playoffs so we know we are going to get their very best shot.”

The Panthers have two D1 players, a running back that’s going to Baylor and a tight end that’s going to UNLV.

“They have those two D1 weapons,” the coach continued. “They are real physical and athletic.”

The Panthers base out of a power spread and operate out of a 3-4 defensive scheme.

“We need to keep playing like we’ve been playing on offense and not turn the ball over,” Dillard said. “We’ve got to tackle this week. We had our chances against Heritage Hall to make plays and just didn’t tackle. We’ve got to get guys down on the ground.”

Dragon notes:

Purcell Head Coach Aaron Dillard nominated Noel Chavez as the Offensive Player of the Week. Chavez carried the ball 11 times for 115 yards and three touchdowns.

Dillard nominated Landry Bacon as the Offensive Lineman of the Week. He graded out at 86 percent against Heritage Hall.

There were no nominations on defense.

Purcell athletic historian Kelly Nemecek reported the 307 yards rushing by Boston Knowles against Star Spencer was a single-game record. The previous single-game record was 294 yards by Gerald Green.
