Dragons host rare Monday game

In a very rare Monday night football game at Conger Field, Purcell man-handled Star Spencer 58-6 with eight different players getting into the end zone.

Junior Matt Hall kicked off the scoring parade with a nine-yard first period scamper. Senior defensive linemen Dylan Smith and Landon Clarke combined for a safety followed by an 16 yard scoring romp by senior Oscar Wren.

It was in the second quarter where the Dragons did the most damage putting up 28 points.

Cash Cook, Cooper Selman, Deaken Dobbins and Braylon Frances all found the end zone on runs of 25, 12, 13 and 21 yards.

Freshman Aedyn Whisenant hauled in a 44-yard pass from fellow freshman Easton Resendiz for a touchdown in the third stanza and freshman Cru Venegas closed out the scoring in the fourth on a 50 yard run.

Junior Paul Glorius was true on every PAT on the night.

“Any time you have that type of production it’s been a good night,” head coach Aaron Dillard said. “Up front our O line played really well.”

He praised the play of Kaden Pliler, Dylan Smith, Brian Cazares, Halo DiRienzo and Aron Barrera.

“Jaden Hitchcock got in and did some good things,” he said. “Offensively, it was a good productive game across the board.

“It was good to get some young guys some work,” the coach continued. “Easton Resendiz played well and our defensive backs had a good night.”

He was referring to the play of Matt Hall, Braylon Francis, Cooper Selman, Cash Cook, Carter Bennett and Cru Venegas.

“We also had a good night overall on defense. We forced four turnovers including three fumbles and a pick. Our D linemen Dylan Smith and Landon Clarke had strong games up inside.

“We got great linebacker play from Braylon Francis, Ty Thoming, Liam Cummings and our secondary played well,” he said speaking of Cash Cook, Oscar Wren, Cooper Selman, Paul Glorius, Deaken Dobbins and Ethan Colburn.”

Dillard said his staff intentionally played a bunch of guys in the secondary getting them some work.

“We covered the vertical passing game that led to sacks,” he said.

Once beaten Heritage Hall will charge into Purcell for a Friday night district football encounter with the Dragons at 7 p.m.

The 7-1 Chargers will present a multiple spread offense that will go from a one back look to a Pro-I formation.

Heritage Hall operates out of a multiple odd stack on defense.

It’s a defense that is very athletic and physical, according to head coach Aaron Dillard.

“They will be a challenge for us for sure,” he said.

“They are good, really good,” Dillard continued. “They are extremely dynamic on offense with multiple weapons from receivers to tight ends and their quarterback is pretty impressive.”

The Chargers lone setback was at the hands of powerful Lincoln Christian early in the season.

Since that loss they’ve been on a roll reeling off six straight victories.

“It’s been a very unusual week,” he said of having to play two games in five days.

“I’m glad our kids are getting to play,” the coach continued. “Originally they wanted to play Tuesday night for their senior night but I said that was too quick of a turnaround for us to play again Friday.

“Then, they wanted to play at Taft Stadium but it wasn’t available. Then they wanted to play at 3 p.m. Monday here but Dr. Sheli McAdoo said that wasn’t feasible logistically. We finally agreed on 5 p.m. Monday,” Dillard said.

Dragon notes:

The Monday night game was a postponed game from last Thursday night due to a shooting and subsequent death of a Star Spencer student last week.

Noted Dragon athletic historian Kelly Nemecek said the last time the Dragons played on Monday night was in 1959, a 38-16, victory over Tecumseh.

Purcell has played on every night of the week, Nemecek said.

Due to the situation at Star, Purcell’s Mama Dragons prepared a game meal for the Bobcats and had gifts for them.

Purcell Head Coach Aaron Dillard nominated Matt Hall as the Offensive Player of the Week. He had eight carries for 65 yards and a touchdown.

Nominated as the Offensive Lineman of the Week was Dylan Smith, who graded out at 95 percent against Star Spencer.

Smith also got the nod as the Defensive Lineman of the Week for his performance Monday night. He made six tackles, had a quarterback sack, forced a fumble, had two quarterback hurries and was in on a safety in the first quarter.

There were no nominations for Defensive Player of the Week.
