Arbuckle Classic slated for this week

Despite Addison Lippel’s 32-point performance, the Lexington Lady ‘Dawgs dropped their first game after the break, a 52-49 loss to Asher.

Lippel had eight threes, five of which were drained in the fourth quarter. She was 4/6 from the free throw line.

Asher came out in the first quarter and outscored Lexington 15-8.

“Kudos to them. Asher was coming off of Christmas break too, and they were hot in the first quarter. We started slow, which was to be expected,” head coach Jacobi Couch said.

Down eight after the first quarter, the Lady Bulldogs had to expend a lot of energy to claw back into the game, according to the coach. Lexington outscored Asher 20-15 in the second and were down 30-27 at halftime.

Once again, Asher outscored Lexington in the third, 15-6. And, in the final stanza, Lippel had all of the Lady Bulldogs’ 16 points.

“Addison lit it up against Asher. She’s just a game. She’s a great leader, both vocally and on the court,” Couch said.

The Lady Bulldogs were in Wayne on Tuesday night.

They are scheduled to play Ringling in their first game of the Arbuckle Classic. Games were scheduled to start on Thursday, but were moved up to Wednesday due to pending winter weather.

“It’s always tough to get back going after the break, so we’re trying to get back in our groove. Sometimes the score doesn’t go our way, but the girls always play hard,” Couch said.

Monday night, in their first game after the break, the Bulldogs dropped a game with Asher, 53-42.

“We played with them tough early, but they pulled away. We made a push toward the end to make it a game, but couldn’t come away with the win,” head coach Derek Clark said.

Elijah Pearman had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Cash Dierking and Colt Mixon each added 11 points.

“We’ve played some good competition, but we are just struggling to put the ball in the basket,” Clark said.

“We’ve played good defense, but we aren’t making enough shots and aren’t good enough at the free throw line.”

Tuesday night, Lexington was in Wayne for a game with the other Bulldogs.

“Wayne has some kids that can play so we’ll have to do a good job guarding them. We’ll have to play well to win, like always.”

Lexington will play Marietta in their first game of the Arbuckle Classic on Wednesday. Games were moved up due to the threat of winter weather on Thursday.

“We got a win over Marietta in the Wynnewood tournament. We’ll have to get our shooting going and play well,” Clark said.

Despite the loss on Monday, Clark can see that his team is playing hard in each game.

“These kids don’t have any quit in them. We have a bunch of kids with not much varsity experience and they are growing with each game. We’re learning and growing with each game and that’s all I can ask.”
