Lexington softball was still looking for its first win under new coach Katelynn Lewis after losing twice at the Stratford Tournament on Thursday to fall to 0-4, 0-2 in Class 3A-2 district play.

The Lady Dawgs lost to Varnum 6-3 in three innings and Stratford 3-0 in three innings during tournament pool play. Both games were limited to 65 minutes.

A single elimination bracket game scheduled for Saturday was rained out.

Through four games, Lewis’ team has been outscored 29-8 and committed nearly as many errors (15) as hits (16).

“We struggled to get our bats going and make in-game adjustments in the first game,” Lewis told The Register. “The second game looked much better, but we fell to Stratford.”

Lexington started strong against Varnum, scoring three runs in its first at-bat. Gracie White walked and advanced to third on a single by Emma Turnpaugh, and both players scored on a hard hit single by Charlie Ross to make it 2-0. Emma Garrett stole home later in the inning to give the Lady Dawgs a short-lived cushion.

Varnum scored three times in the first off starter Marleigh Givens to pull even then added three runs in the second to take the lead for good.

Lexington is scheduled to play four District games this week. The Lady Dawgs hosted Bethel at home on Monday, hosted two games against Crooked Oak on Tuesday and played at Henryetta on Wednesday.
