The timing couldn’t have been better for Lexington’s slumping baseball team.
Two lopsided losses to state No. 2 Marlow followed by a loss to Marlow’s junior varsity, and the Bulldogs needed a game to get healthy.
Turns out, Wayne provided the perfect remedy for Lexington’s ailing bats at the Jake Leffler Memorial Tournament on Thursday.
Matt Dierking’s team scored 10 runs in the second inning and won 11-1. Cash Dierking had two hits and two RBIs, and Colby Haynes also knocked in a pair of runs for the Bulldogs.
Starting pitcher Cody Rollins allowed two hits in three innings of work.
“They all played really well and hit the ball really well,” Dierking said. “It was a collective effort.”
The Bulldogs followed up the win with a 17-2 victory over Temple on Friday. Cameron Haley had two of Lexington’s nine hits, including a double, and drove in four runs.
Caydn Krueger and Rhydon Foutch, who tripled, added three RBIs each. Braxton Keesee and James McMillan shared pitching duties.
Lexington made it three straight tournament wins the next day, beating Wilson 4-3.
The Bulldogs scored four times in the first inning then held on for the win.
McMillian pitched 3.1 innings, allowing two hits and one run. He was relieved in the fourth inning by Kash Klupenger, who got the save.
Klupenger also came through at the plate with a home run and two RBIs. Haley and Krueger also had RBIs for Lexington (19-8, 6-2).
Davis ended the winning streak with a 14-9 District win on Monday.
McMillan had four hits for Lexington but started and took the loss, allowing 13 hits and 12 runs in 3.1 innings of work. Krueger tripled and drove in four runs in a losing effort.
The teams were scheduled to play again Tuesday at Lexington.
Pitching is a concern for Dierking, who said his team is “down arms.”
“We don’t have a lot of pitching, so it’s kind of tough when we get in these tournaments and District games,” he said. “I’ve got a kid, Kash Klupenger, who can pitch a little bit and he’s real good for us when he can pitch, but his arm’s been hurting for a while.
“I’m relying on two kids right now, James McMillan and Colby Haynes, to get us through.”
A pair of pivotal District games remain against Lindsay on April 20-21. Lexington wraps up the regular season with games against Purcell on April 23 and Stratford on April 24.
“It’s going to be us and Lindsay fighting for second place,” Dierking said.
Marlow, which beat the Bulldogs 10-0 on April 6 and 12-1 on April 7, is firmly in control of first place.
