Lady ‘Dawgs win consolation

Two wins in the Beggs tourney

Posted

Last week the Lady ‘Dawgs were in the Beggs tournament. They dropped their first game, 38-14, to Beggs, but won their next two to take the Consolation title.

“I’m extremely, extremely proud of this team. They had every reason to quit and they competed like crazy in the tournament,” head coach Jacobi Couch said.

In the consolation game, Lexington beat Henryetta 32-27. It was the first and fourth quarters that helped them pick up the five point win.

The Lady ‘Dawgs roared out in front scoring 14 in the first quarter and allowing just three for Henryetta. But that flip-flopped  in the second quarter as Lex scored two to Henryetta’s 11. Lexington held a 16-14 lead at halftime.

At the end of three quarters, Henryetta had an 18-17 lead.

To finish out the game, Lexington outscored Henryetta 15-9 to pick up the win.

Scoring was led by Dulce Rodriguez’s nine points. Lexie Torres added seven while Ava Rowe had six.

Their first game was a low-scoring match with Lex just scratching three first quarter points to Beggs’ eight. The second quarter was much the same as Beggs added eight again and Lexington had five.

Lex managed six second-half points while Beggs’ offense heated up to score 22 and pull out the 38-14 win.

Lexie Torres was the Lady ‘Dawgs’ leading scorer with seven.

In their second game, Lexington beat Southeast 40-28.

Behind Dulce Rodriguez’s 13 and Ava Rowe’s 12, the Lady Bulldogs’ scoring heated up in the second half to pull out the win.

Down 17-11 at the break, Lexington scored 29 through the third and fourth quarters while holding Southeast to just 11 second half points.

Emma Turnpaugh had six points, Hadley Wilkins had five and Torres had four.

Early last week, Lexington hosted Wynnewood for Homecoming but fell to the Lady Savages 52-49.

Torres singed the nets for 23 points while Rowe added 15.

Senior Addie Lippel is out with a non-contact injury and, according to Couch, it has been tough to have her out. Several girls stepped up during the tournament including Torres, Wilkins, Rodriguez and Rowe.

“Phyllis Webb was rebounding and getting steals and tipped balls. She played tough on D.”

The Lady ‘Dawgs were scheduled to host Davis on Tuesday and Little Axe on Friday.

The Lexington Bulldogs dropped their first two games of the Beggs tournament – 69-38 against Henryetta and 56-50 against Earlsboro – but finished strong with a 68-54 win over Capitol Hill.

In their final game of the tournament, the second quarter is what proved to be the game changer.

Down 16-13 after the first stanza, Lexington came roaring back with 27 second quarter points. Cash Dierking had 13 alone in that quarter.

They held a 40-21 halftime lead.

Capitol Hill staged their own comeback in the fourth quarter with 27 points, but Lexington’s lead was too much to overcome.

Dierking finished the game with 15 points. Reece Beason and Gavrie Williams joined him in double figures with 10 apiece. Elijah Pearman added nine and James McMillan had eight.

In their first game of the tournament, Henryetta jumped out from the start with 22 first quarter points. Lexington scored two.

The Chicks had a 31-17 halftime lead and they continued to build on that lead the rest of the game.

Pearman had a team-high 16 points. Colt Mixon had 10 while Williams had eight.

Three Bulldogs were in double figures in the close loss to Earlsboro. Dierking led with 13 points while Colt Mixon and Pearman had 11 apiece.

The Bulldogs were hosting Davis on Tuesday and Little Axe on Friday.
