Lady Dawgs learning

Victories have been hard to come by for the Lexington softball team, which is learning some hard lessons under first-year coach Katelynn Lewis.

The Lady Dawgs were in position to win their third game of the season against Morris August 1, leading 7-3 after four innings.

From there, Lewis’ team was out-scored 13-1, including 11-0 over the final two innings to lose 16-8. The Lady Dawgs committed four errors that led to six unearned runs.

Lexington (2-7) will look to get back on track on Tuesday at home against Henryetta.

The Lady Dawgs started strong against Morris, scoring four runs in the first innings and two more in the second for a 6-0 advantage.

“We were playing great through the first four innings,” Lewis told The Register. “The last few innings of the game Morris started hitting well, and we had several errors in the field. Ultimately, our offense couldn’t make up the runs we gave up later in the game.”

Morris erupted for nine runs in the sixth inning against Lexington pitchers Emma Garrett and Marleigh Givens, who contributed two hits and two RBIs. Peyton Harmon also drove in a pair of runs.

Lewis called it “a learning game.”

“We can look at the things done right in the first half and where things started to fall apart in the end,” she concluded.
