The Wayne Bulldogs kept their road momentum going last Friday night with a 44-12 shellacking of the Hinton Comets.
The Bulldogs offense and defense complimented each other all night with the defense forcing five turnovers and the offense turning those turnovers into points.
Langston McClendon put Wayne on the board first after being on the receiving end of a seven yard Eli Stottlemeyer pass to take a 6-0 lead.
Jeremiah Peterson hit pay dirt after a 40-yard scamper in the second quarter. The two-point attempt saw Stottlemeyer find McClendon to put Wayne up 14-0.
Peterson wasn't finished finding the endzone in frame two tacking on a six-yard touchdown run to put Wayne ahead 20-0.
The Bulldog run game kept its foot on the pedal just before halftime. The Wayne line helped open a hole for Tyler Collins who found plenty of prairie on his way to an 80-yard touchdown run. Stottlemeyer found McClendon for two points to give Wayne a 28 point first half lead heading to the locker room.
“We got off to a quick start and ran the ball really well,” Sharp said.
Collin's found the end zone for the second time to open the scoring in the third quarter toting the rock 25 yards to the end zone. The two-point try was again successful as Stottleyer and McClendon hooked up for their third two point conversion.
Later in the third Collins padded his rushing stats with another cross country run this time going 75-yards to put Wayne ahead 42-0. This time Stottlemeyer found an open Riley Taylor for the two point conversion to give Wayne a 44-0 lead late in the third.
Hinton tacked on a late touchdown in the third and their final score with 1:42 remaining in the lopsided Wayne victory.
The Bulldogs accumulated 433 yards rushing through only three quaters of play.
“Our offensive line did a good job and our backs ran hard,” Sharp said.
“Overall I was very pleased with the way the offense played.”
Collins finished the night with 240 yards on only 13 carries for a staggering 18.5 yards per rush and three touchdowns.
Peterson was also over the century mark with 114 yards on eight carries and two touchdowns.
“Those two guys were our workhorses,” Sharp said.
“We had several others that contributed as well and I was really pleased with the running game. We didn't have to throw the ball very much because of how well our running game was working.”
Stottlemeyer finished 6-8 for only 19 yards but Sharp said it was his play that doesn't show up on the stat sheet that stuck out.
“Eli did really well on our two-point conversions and made good decisions, He did really well making sure we were in the right plays all night,” Sharp said.
“We are still having false starts with snap counts that we need to get ironed out and we will.”
The Wayne defense flexed their muscle allowing only 101 total yards with 64 coming on the ground and forced five turnovers
“Defense played really well. They have explosive receivers and we did a good job of slowing them down,” Sharp said.
“We gave up one pass for a touchdown and their last touchdown came against our pups in mop up duty. Overall it was a good night by our defense.”
Taylor led all defenders with 12 tackles while Peterson had 11 stops and recovered a fumble. McClendon added four tackles but more importantly picked off two Comet passes.
Stottlemeyer forced a fumble and recovered a fumble while Jake Turner also jumped on a Hinton fumble.
“Riley made the move to the MIKE linebacker spot this week and played really well leading us in tackles,” Sharp noted.
“He's a senior captain and he got us in the right defense all night. Was really impressed by how he played.”
Wayne plays their home opener this Friday night hosting the Wayne Bulldogs with a 7 p.m. kick.
“Lexington will spread it out and throw the ball all over. They have good receivers and they're going to show up and play well against us,” Sharp said.
“They faced one of the best teams in the state in their first game against Konawa and anyone who thinks that team will show up this Friday is flat wrong.”
Sharp noted Lexington will base out of a 3-4 defense but will also give Wayne some even fronts on that side of the ball.
“They have athletic linebackers, a really good secondary and a defensive line that gets after it,” Sharp said.
“They'll be fired up to play us and it's going to be a real challenge. We're excited to start 2-0 and are ready to get back out and play again this Friday.”
Bulldog notes:
Wayne Head Coach Brandon Sharp nominated Tyler Collins as the Offensive Player of the Week. Collins finished the night with 240 yards on 13 carries and three touchdowns.
Zeke Gavia was the Offensive Lineman of the Week nominee after grading out at 70 percent.
Sharp nominated both Riley Taylor and Langston McClendon as Defensive Player of the Week. Taylor had 12 tackles from his linebacker position while McClendon had two interceptions to go along with four tackles.
