Purcell’s Fast-pitch team took a 10-6 record to Tuttle Tuesday after pocketing a pair of district victories over Perkins-Tryon last week.
The Dragons edged the Demons 7-6 in the first game of the double header, out-hitting the visitors 10-6.
In the nightcap of the twin bill, Purcell prevailed 4-2 with junior Kendra Anderson in the circle.
Coach Jason Tompkins said freshman Taryn Knowles closed out the contest.
Tompkins reported Knowles, Kyleigh Reinhold and Kyndall Willams all went 2-3. Knowles hits were a double and a triple.
“We are learning to keep the fight going and battling back to find a way to win,
Tompkins said.
The Dragons turned around and traveled to Harrah last Thursday, August 27 and dropped a pair of district contests, narrowly losing 1-0 in the first game and 3-2 in the nightcap.
In the 1-0 loss, Harrah pitching limited the Dragons to three hits, one each by Miaca Martinez, Williams and Anderson, who tripled in the contest.
“We have to learn to hit the opposite field when runners are in scoring position,” the coach said. “We left nine runners on base and couldn’t get them in.”
Senior Ava Sparks was in the circle and didn’t allow a run until the bottom of the seventh.
“She was great,” Tompkins said. “We just need to be better at the plate to back her up.
“With a young team we will have some growing pains but I feel they are learning very quickly and are understanding what it takes to get the job done.
“I felt like we had a chance but the bats were too quiet against a good Harrah team,” he concluded.
The Dragons will play in the Dale/Tecumseh Tournament this weekend.
They will play Lone Grove at Firelake Thursday at 5 p.m. and Guthrie at 6:30 p.m. Friday’s games at Tecumseh include the host Savages at 1:30 p.m. and Prague at 3 p.m. The game time Saturday has yet to be determined.
