Dragons win consolation trophy at Wayne/Wynnewood tournament

Cole Sharp’s Purcell Dragons took a four-game winning streak into Spring Break at the Southeast Shootout at Broken Bow.

The Dragons were scheduled to play Durant at 6 p.m. Monday, 2A Top 10 Panama at 5 p.m. Tuesday and Stigler at 11 a.m. Wednesday.

After dropping their first round game in the I-35 Classic (Wayne and Wynnewood) Tournament  3-2 to Velma, the Dragons reeled off four straight victories when their offense clicked in.

They knocked off Maysville 13-1 in three innings, Ninnekah, 12-4 in four innings, Stratford 14-0 in three innings and Dickson, 13-5.

Parker Page went 3-3 with a pair of RBIs in the Maysville victory.

The Knowles brothers, Boston and Kash, led the offense in the Ninnekah win. Boston was 2-2 with two RBIs and scored three times. Kash was 2-3 with an RBI and scored once. Casey Billingsley, Page, Deaken Dobbins, Jett Tyler and Cooper Selman all had hits in the game.

Page and Dobbins led the offense in the Stratford victory with two each. Page was 2-2 with five RBIs including a double and a home run. Dobbins was 2-2 including a double and scored twice.

Dickson drew first blood pushing across three runs in the top of the first.

The Comets pushed their lead to 4-2 heading into the bottom of the second but Purcell scored five unanswered runs to take a 7-4 lead in the third and went on to post the eight run victory.

Selman, Dobbins, Bryson Perkins and Tyler all had two hits in the game. Tyler was 2-3 with three RBIs. Page and Cash Cook both had doubles in the contest.

“We took the lead in the second 2-0 but Velma came back to take the lead 3-2 and we could not overcome it,” Sharp said. “I thought the Velma pitcher did a good job against us keeping us off balance. We never could barrel him up. We made a couple mistakes in the field and they made us pay. We just came a little flat and could not get any rhythm going.”

Dobbins took the loss on the mound.

All games in the tournament were limited to five innings or 90 minutes due to the rain.

Boston Knowles was credited with the win over Maysville.

“Boston overall didn’t throw his best but still competed,” the coach said.

“This was our first win of the season and that was big relief. We needed it.”

In his first varsity start, freshman Cash Cook pocketed the win on the mound against Ninnekah.

“I was proud of Cash for how he came out and threw strikes,” Sharp said. “He did lose a little control but overall did what he was supposed to do.

“Freshman Preston Kane got his first varsity action as well, coming in relief and finished the game.”

We hit the ball well as a team and had good approaches at the plate,” Sharp said. “We played well and took care of business.”

Sophomore Bryce Blair tossed a one-hitter against Stratford.

“Bryce controlled the strike zone all day.  Dialed in, he only threw 37 pitches in the game.

“That was probably our best game overall including hitting, pitching and defense.  We played a lot of guys and got some guys varsity experience.”

The Dickson game was for third place.

“Casey Billingsley got the start for us on the mound,” Sharp said. “Kash Knowles and Bryce Blair both pitched in relief with Kash ending up the winning pitcher.  This game was kinda’ back and forth before we pulled away in the late innings. It was a rainy game for the most part and our guys battled and took care of business and brought home the consolation championship trophy.”

Purcell was 4-9 heading into the Spring Break Southeast Shootout.
