Purcell’s Dragons bounced back last week and were on a three-game winning streak heading into Tuesday’s road trip to Cushing.

The 13-8 Dragons won three out of four contests in the Dale/Tecumseh Tournament.

They opened the event coming up on the short end of a 5-0 game against Lone Grove but finished strong edging Guthrie, 2-1, and Prague, 2-1 and whitewashing Tecumseh, 8-zip.

They were scheduled to play in the Noble Tournament Thursday and Friday with their side of the bracket to be played in Norman.

Kendra Anderson and Taryn Knowles tag-teamed in the circle to limit Guthrie to three hits. Anderson got the starting nod, recording six outs while giving two hits and no runs. Knowles pitched three innings and gave up a hit and one run.

Knowles helped her own cause with a triple. Kiki Waterman singled to center with both runners eventually scoring to lift Purcell to victory.

Knowles started in the circle against Prague last Friday and registered seven strikeouts and scattered two hits to keep the Red Devils off the scoreboard through the first four innings.

In relief, Anderson finished the game.

Purcell scored in the bottom of the first when Kyndall Williams laid down a sacrifice bunt followed by a Jaycee Holman single to center field. They both eventually scored giving the Dragons the lead they would never relinquish.

Kyleigh Reinhold led the offense going 2-3 at the plate and Williams had an RBI.

“We played well,” head coach Jason Tompkins said. “We just need to learn how to put people away when the opportunity presents itself.

“We had multiple chances to score but just couldn’t get them in. We need to be more efficient at situational hitting so that we give ourselves a better chance to put teams away,” the coach said.

Purcell erupted for eight runs in their half of the second inning and went on to shutout the Savages behind the one-hit pitching of Ava Sparks.

Miaca Martinez had a three RBI single followed by a two-run double by Spark. Reinhold smacked an RBI double and Gracie Powell’s single brought in a run.

“We were patient at the plate receiving six walks,” Tompkins noted. “Again we scored in only one inning which will not work against good teams in the playoffs.

“We are learning and trying to apply strategies at the plate. We just need to be more aware of our situational hitting  when we have runners in scoring position. Our defense was great. We didn’t commit a single error in that game.

“I am proud of the ladies and how they compete,” Tompkins said. “They played a great tournament last weekend. I love their fight. We will keep growing and get all these details ironed out before playoff time.”

Tompkins said the Dragon bats were pretty quiet in the loss to Lone Grove. They also dropped an 8-2 contest at Tuttle September 1.

In the Noble Tournament they are scheduled to  play Enid Friday at 10:30 a.m. and have a high noon game scheduled against Norman North.
