Purcell’s Dragons won two of three games they played in last weekend’s Dibble Tournament.
Coach Cole Sharp’s Dragons run-ruled Walters, 13-1 and Lexington, 10-3 sandwiched around a 4-3 loss to Latta in an extra inning affair in the tournaments’s semifinals.
Sophomore Kash Knowles pitched all three innings in the Walters victory giving up only one hit in the three inning contest.
Knowles helped his own cause going 3-3 including a home run at the plate and finishing with three RBIs. Junior Deaken Dobbins also had multiple hits in the game going 2-2 including a two run home run. He finished with three RBIs and scored twice.
Cash Cook, Parker Page, Casey Billingsley, Brody Walkup and Bryce Perkins all had hits in the victory.
“Kash came out and threw strikes and took care of business.” Sharp said of his sophomore hurler.
“We hit the ball really well as a team, the highlight was Deaken Dobbins hitting a home run in the second. Deaken has been hitting the ball for good lately. I thought we came out and had good approaches at the plate. We scored nine runs in the first inning and never looked back.
“We played good defense behind Kash. I thought we responded a lot better coming out and jumping up on Walters early and finishing the game off,” the coach said.
Perkins, Billingsley, Page, Kash Knowles and Cook all went 2-3 in the victory over Lexington when the Dragons out-hit the Bulldogs 12-4.
Sophomore Preston Kane pocketed the victory on the mound. He and Deaken Dobbins struck out six in the six inning contest last Saturday.
“Preston Kane got his first start and I thought did a really good job of challenging the hitters and attacking the zone all day,” the coach said.
Kane tossed five innings of the game. He fanned four Bulldogs and walked a pair. Dobbins came in relief striking out two in one inning of work.
“The highlight was Kash Knowles hitting a three run home run. Kash is playing very well for us and is hitting really well in the three hole. I thought we hit the ball early but kinda’ coasted the rest of the way, but we finished strong at the end,” Sharp said.
“I was proud of all the guys the way they came out in this tournament and competed. I always look to win two or three games in every tournament we play. We have done that so far and we will need to continue to get better and stay focused the rest of the way.”
Kash Knowles pitched seven innings of the nine inning game giving up two runs. Boston Knowles came in to relieve his brother and also gave up two runs with the winning score coming in the bottom of the ninth. Billingsley was the leading Dragon hitter going 3-4 with an RBI.
Purcell took it on the chin March 25 when they traveled to Oklahoma Christian.
The hosts put up a seven spot in the bottom of the first off starter Deaken Dobbins. They pushed across a pair of runs in the bottom of the third and added three more in the bottom of the fourth. Purcell was out-hit in the game 9-4. The Dragons also had three errors.
“Deaken Dobbins got the start and Boston Knowles came in relief to finish the game. I thought we needed to be better at attacking the zone and not giving up free passes.
“We just came out flat and got down early and never recovered and cut into the lead. We just need to be better at coming out and competing better,” Sharp said.
Purcell improved its record to 10-8 after posting a 5-3 decision over Bridge Creek Monday.
The Dragons jumped out to a 3-love lead in first inning.
Page went the distance for the Dragons on the mound, striking out 10 Bobcats.
Page helped his own cause crushing a two-run homer in the fifth frame.
Boston Knowles and Billingsley had the other two Purcell hits in the contest.
“Parker pitched really well for us. He controlled the strike zone all day and challenged their hitters.
“We had runners in scoring position multiple times and we just couldn’t get them across. We need to be better at situational hitting in those moments.
“I am proud of the way we came out and competed and scored three runs in the first inning to put pressure on them and we finished the game. We will need to continue that throughout the rest of the season,” the coach confirmed.
Purcell was scheduled for another district game with Bridge Creek at home Tuesday but that was canceled due to the potential for severe weather.
Thursday Purcell travels to Shawnee for a 5 p.m. game. They host Wynnewood Friday at 4:30 p.m.
