Dragons travel to Washington

Coming off bye week

Purcell Head Coach Aaron Dillard summed up Friday night’s opponent in two words.

“They’re good,” Dillard said of the Washington Warriors.

Washington has already tangled with two 3A opponents in Perkins in Week 0 and Sulphur last week.

“They have an extra game on us,” Dillard continued. “They beat Perkins pretty solidly and barely lost to Sulphur. It’ll be a good test for us.”

Dillard reports the Warriors will operate out of a spread on offense and base out of an odd front on defense.

“They’re good on both offense and defense and have a lot of experienced guys back.

“Their quarterback (junior Creed Barrett) has played at a high level for a long time,” Dillard said. “They are very dynamic at all their skill positions.”

“The key for us is limiting big, explosive plays. Sulphur had a lot of success making them sustain drives,” the coach noted.

“A hidden metric for us is winning first down. If we can keep them in second and long it will be beneficial for the Dragons. If we lose first down, it’s going to be tough.

“We need to take care of the ball on offense and limit our pre-snap penalties,” Dillard said of committing 18 penalties against Lindsay.

“It’s been a point of focus for us the last two weeks,” he confirmed.

Kick off at Reed Field Friday is scheduled for 7 p.m.
