Dragons open 2022 season on the road

Purcell kicks off the 2022 gridiron season on the long road to Alva Friday night at 7 p.m.

Head coach Tracy Scott reports the Goldbugs play an offense structured much like what Air Force runs.

“They play an option offense and were pretty basic in the scrimmage,” Scott said. “I’m sure they will expand (the playbook) on us.

“They’ve got a really good fullback who also plays linebacker for them,” Scott continued. “He’s a pretty good player. We can’t go to sleep with their run, run, run and then go play action with a pass.”

Alva plays a 4-4 on defense which will force the Dragons to get the ball out to the perimeter to loosen up their linebackers.

“Then we can run up inside,” the coach said. “We’re pretty balanced on offense and that’s a good thing for us. I feel good that if we don’t make a bunch of silly mistakes and just execute we will be alright.”

The Dragons matched up with the physical play of Anadarko and Bethel in last Friday’s only scrimmage of the season.

“They are both pretty physical and for the most part we looked pretty good. Of course there are some things we’ve got to fix but I was pleased on both sides of the ball,” Scott said.

“On offense I was wanting to see if we made the right reads and on defense everyone just doing their job.

“I wanted to see how we matched up with their physicality,” he confirmed.

At the end of the varsity portion Purcell went on a 10-play drive against Bethel.

“We had some stupid penalties that kept us from scoring,” the coach said.

Anadarko had a 10-play drive against the Dragons and the Purcell defenders kept the Warriors out of the end zone.
