Dragons needing offense

Bats have been quiet to start season

Purcell’s bats were fairly quiet in a pair of shutout losses last week to Chickasha and Dibble.

Junior Boston Knowles had hits in both games. Cooper Selman had a double in the Dibble game and Deaken Dobbins had a hit in the Chickasha contest.

The second game with Chickasha ended 12-0 while the Demons shut out the Dragons, 6-0 March 7.

Tuttle pinned a 10-0 loss on the Dragons Monday at Purcell.

Boston Knowles took the loss on the mound against the Chicks giving up six hits.

“I thought Boston started out well pitching but struggled finding the strike zone especially in the second inning,” head coach Cole Sharp said.

That’s when Chickasha pushed across six runs.

“Cole Smedley came in for relief pitching two innings and Kash Knowles pitched an inning,” Sharp said.

“Casey (Billingsley) got in trouble early and led off with two walks and really couldn’t get settled in,” Sharp said of his starting pitcher.

“Kash Knowles came in in relief and did a good job slowing down the Dibble bats,” Sharp said. “I have been proud of Kash this year so far in the games he has pitched and has done a good job attacking the zone and throwing strikes,” the coach said of his freshman hurler.

“Hitting-wise we are still having trouble hitting the ball as a whole. Dibble’s pitcher did a great job in keeping us off balance throughout the game.

Coming off a 10-0 loss at the hands of Tuttle Monday, Purcell was to travel to Tuttle Tuesday to take on the powereful Tigers.

Carter Goldston and Kash Knowles both had hits in the game with Dobbins taking the loss on the mound.

“Tuttle is a really good hitting team and they hit the ball where we weren’t,” Sharp said. “They just had good at-bats.”

Bryce Blair relieved Dobbins in the final two innings, tossing strikes and not yielding a run.

“We still made some mistakes in the field and we have to do a better job in limiting them,” the coach said. “That’s especially true against a team like Tuttle. They will make you pay for your mistakes.”

“Overall, we have to start doing a better job throwing strikes giving ourselves a chance on the mound and have better quality at-bats to stay in games and compete,” Sharp confirmed. “We need to be more focused.”
