For the second consecutive week the Wayne Bulldogs (7-2) will be in a high-stakes match up as they host the Ringling Blue Devils this Friday night at 7 p.m. at D.S. Zack Powell Stadium.
“They're a typical Ringling team,” head coach Brandon Sharp said.
“They're big and physical up-front and they have outstanding skill kids who can run really well.”
The Blue Devils will base out of a double tight end and wing sets with the power run game as their bread and butter.
“They will bunch you in there offensively and they like the power run game and they do it well,” Sharp said.
Defensively Ringling will base out of the 4-2-5 but will show the Bulldogs multiple defensive schemes throughout the game.
“They will show a four-man front but also walk a linebacker down to the line of scrimmage and will shift to a ‘50’ front as well,” Sharp continued.
“It's tough because they don't have a lot of weaknesses. They get to the football and are a very gap sound team.”
Wayne and Ringling are facing off with third and fourth in the district on the line and the Bulldogs are ready to put last week behind them.
“They're a couple plays away from being first in the district and we know how good they are. We will have to play lights out and cause turnovers to get things going our way,” Sharp said.
“Our biggest thing is we have to come back this week and respond. We need to show people and ourselves that we aren't who we showed last week and that’s what we’re looking to do.”
Last Friday night Wayne fell to the Konawa Tigers, 58-14.
Konawa led 8-0 after the first quarter before things got away from the visiting Bulldogs.
Konawa took advantage of miscues to take a 30-0 lead to halftime.
Tyler Collins put Wayne on the scoreboard in the third quarter on a 46-yard touchdown scamper as Konawa led 50-6 heading to the fourth.
Eli Stottlemyer hit Jake Turner on an eight yard touchdown toss in the fourth as Konawa closed it out.
“We came out in the first quarter and were playing tough. We had a couple busts that could’ve made the game 0-0 but gave up big play that setup their first touchdown. After the first quarter it snowballed on us,” Sharp said.
Collins finished with yet another 100-yard game for the Bulldogs finishing with 110 on 14 carries.
“They took control and whipped us up-front. They're big and physical and our kids hadn’t been in a game that physical all year and we didn’t respond well. To their credit they’re a great team and there's a reason they’re one of the top teams in our class,” Sharp said.
“We didn’t tackle well and didn’t respond like we wanted to when we got down. I didn’t call a good game to put them in position to be successful."
Sharp said he was pleased with the way Collins ran the football for the situation they were in.
“Tyler ran the ball hard again and it just wasn’t the night we wanted. Hopefully the kids respond and we’re ready for this Friday night,"” Sharp concluded.
