Purcell takes an 11 game winning streak into the Chickasha Regional Tournament.
The Dragons opened with Ardmore on Wednesday to start the three-day tournament. The Fighting Chicks opened the tournament against Western Heights. Winners of the first round games were to play at 3 p.m. Wednesday with the losers of games one and two set to play at 5 p.m. Wednesday in an elimination contest.
Purcell polished off Wynnewood Monday, 8-0, to end the regular season at 22-7.
“We pitched by committee with the Regional looming,” head coach Cole Sharp said.
Brody Walkup started the game, then Cash Cook, Preston Kane, Bryce Blair and finished up by Layton Percey.
“All guys did a great job throwing strikes and getting in some good work before the Regional Tournament,” the coach confirmed.
Bryce Blair was the leading hitter going 3-4 with a pair of RBIs. Kash Knowles went 2-4 with an RBI and Deaken Dobbins was 1-2 with two RBIs.
“We still need to have a better approach at the plate,” Sharp said.
Last week the Dragons shut out Bethany 2-0 and topped Lexington 16-6 fueled by an 11-run seventh inning.
Both Dragon runs in the Bethany victory came via the long ball. Cash Cook had a lead off home run to start the game and Blair went yard in the fifth frame. Otherwise, the Dragon bats were largely quiet.
“We needed a game like that to see how our kids would react,” Sharp said. “ They stayed calm and poised and battled, finding a way to win.”
Knowles threw a complete game against the Bronchos tossing seven innings of three-hit ball. He fanned nine Bethany batters.
Blair picked up the victory on the mound for Purcell in the 10-run victory over Lexington.
Blair went 3 2/3 innings, striking out five and issuing a trio of walks.
“I thought Bryce had a good, gutsy performance,” Sharp said. “He kinda’ got in trouble early but found a way out and got in a groove after that.”
Brody Walkup pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief, fanning six before losing his control in the last inning.
Preston Kane preserved the win getting the last two outs.
“We didn’t have many hits but did walk 12 times,” Sharp said. “We ended up pulling away in the seventh putting up 11 runs.”
Blair was 2-4 with two RBIs to pace the offense.
