Dragon bats heat up

Three-straight run-rule victories

Purcell’s bats were so hot last week both Ardmore and Tecumseh needed to call the fire department to get them out.

That didn’t change on Monday of this week.

The Dragons actually trailed Ardmore one-love going into the bottom of the first but struck back to put up a three-spot in their half and never looked back.

Purcell pushed across a single run in the second, third and fourth innings and blew the game wide open with four sixth inning runs.

Cooper Selman led the eight-hit attack going 3-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs.

Bryce Blair was 2-3 including a dinger with a pair of RBIs.

Cash Cook, Layton Percey and Connor Lund had the other three Purcell hits off Tiger pitching.

Once Dragon runners got on the base paths they played like thieves swiping seven bases. Selman led the way with three stolen bases while Percey had two. Deaken Dobbins and Cook had the other two.

Brody Walkup went the distance on the mound for the Dragons tossing six innings of three-hit ball. He struck out four and issued only one walk.

“I thought Brody threw well,” head coach Cole Sharp said. “He commanded the strike zone throughout the game.”

To go with Purcell’s 10 hits, Tiger pitching walked the Dragons 11 times in the run-rule victory.

“I thought we had good quality at bats,” the coach continued. “We got a lot of walks and timely hits when we needed them.”

The Dragons out-hit Tecumseh the following day on the road 11-1.

Purcell’s pitching by committee did the trick. Starter Bryce Blair pitched two innings and Kash Knowles and Preston Kane each threw an inning. They proved to be very effective giving up on one hit and striking out six.

Blair not only pocketed the victory on the bump but knocked in four runs in a 3-3 day that included a double.

Walkup’s 1-2 outing at the plate was a double.

Cook’s hit was a two-run home run while Knowles went 2-4 with an RBI.

Selman, Dobbins, Percey, Carter Bennett and Walkup all had hits in the game.

The Dragons got off to a fast start scoring two in the first inning, four in the second, four in the third and three in the fourth to polish off the Savages.

“I thought we came out and did a good job jumping on them early and continued to put runs up each inning to put pressure on them. “We had a good approach at the plate and played well in the field,” Sharp concluded.

The Dragon sticks didn’t cool off over the weekend with a 10-0 run-rule road victory over Bethany in district play Monday.

Dobbins tossed a one-hit gem and the Dragons pounded out 10 hits off three Broncho pitchers.

Knowles and Dobbins led the hit parade both going 2-3. They both scored twice and Deaken helped his own pitching cause, driving in a pair of base runners.

Cook, Selman, Blair, Percey, Bennett and Izak Auz all had a hit.

“We had good approaches at the plate,” the coach said. “We had some timely hits as well.  We scored seven runs with two out in the game.”

And once again the Dragons were swift on the base paths stealing eight bases.

Dobbins fanned a dozen Bronchos in his five innings of work.

“Deaken threw a heck of a game. Not only did he command the strike zone but had his stuff working,” Sharp said.

At one point, Dobbins registered 10 Ks in a row.

“That was a big win for seeding purposes for the playoffs.  We were focused and played a clean game. We will need to have that type of focus at the end of the season,” Sharp confirmed.

This week is another busy week for the now 19-7 Dragons.

“We have a big district series finale with Bethany on Tuesday and play at Lexington Thursday and Shawnee at home Friday,” the coach reported.
