Senior Jaxon Dill scored a team-high 21 points in the Bulldogs’ 57-56 loss to Dibble Monday night to put him over the 1,500 career point mark.
“Jaxon has had a great career at Wayne. He’ll finish his four years by being named to eight all-tournament teams and a two-time tournament MVP,” Embry said.
In Monday night’s loss, Dibble jumped out 38-23 lead after the first two quarters.
“We weren’t playing our physical defense early on. They were getting transition layups on us like Wynnewood did,” Embry said.
Wayne turned up the physical defense in the second half, especially the third quarter and were able to chip away at the Dibble lead.
Ty Kemp joined Dill in double figures with 19. Ben Fisher had six points.
Last week, Wayne was in the Healdton tournament. They got a 48-34 win over the host team in their first game but dropped their second two games – an 88-60 loss to Wynnewood and a 60-50 loss to ECP.
“Against Healdton we struggled offensively. We got going in the second and third quarters and built up a decent lead. That allowed us to get our subs in to get them some good game action,” Embry said.
Kemp and Dill were the leading scorers with 19 and 16 respectively. Ben Fisher had eight.
“We were successful at attacking the rim. We got to the free throw line and that helped us to get the lead going into the fourth quarter.”
Their second game was against an athletic Wynnewood team.
“They had a guy that would not miss. Wynnewood played 13 guys so they have a deep bench. And they can all run,” Embry said.
Three Bulldogs were in double figures led by Dill’s 15. Fisher and Kemp had 11 apiece.
In their final game of the tournament, Wayne fell to ECP 60-50.
“We had things off from the get-go. Our main three guys didn’t start the game together and we were just off.”
Despite going 1-2 in the Healdton tournament, Embry was pleased with the opportunities to get his bench some playing time.
“We’ve gained some depth over the last four games. Adolfo started and he’s played well and Brody Kemp started all of the tournament games and played well.
“I’m happy we can play more guys and get them playing time but we’re just struggling offensively right now,” Embry said.
The Bulldogs are off the rest of the week and will face off with Wynnewood again on Monday, February 4.
Girls
The Lady Bulldogs dropped both games in the Healdton tournament – a 54-20 loss to Turner and a 45-15 loss to Wynnewood. Monday night they lost to Dibble, 43-27.
“We are struggling a lot offensively right now; making young and immature mistakes,” Embry said.
The bright spot for Embry was the second half of Monday’s game with Dibble.
Down 16-9 at halftime, Wayne made some adjustments and played better in the second half.
Audra Watts’ 10 points was the team-high. Taelyn Ringwald added eight.
The Lady Bulldogs will be back on the court at Wynnewood Monday, February 4.
