Picked up a win over Comanche on Monday

The Lexington Bulldogs have four wins under their belt, including a 10-0 win over Comanche on Monday.

“Ryan Johnson shut them out and we swung the bat well behind Ryan’s pitching performance,” head coach Matt Dierking said.

The senior had a six strikeout performance against Comanche. He allowed no runs on just two hits and one walk.

The Bulldogs finished the game with 12 hits, including a homerun by Colby Haynes in the fourth inning. Johnson, Haynes and Buddy Cormany each had multiple hits.

Last Friday Lexington traveled to Hennessey and picked up a 4-2 win.

“We played together as a team and executed some bunts and hit-and-runs,” Dierking said.

The Bulldogs had seven hits in the win, including two from Johnson.

Lexington got on the board in the third inning thanks to an error.

The Eagles scored two in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead.

But, the Bulldogs scored three to retake the lead in the fifth. James McMillan walked, Johnson singled and Cormany singled to each score a run.

McMillan went four and two-thirds innings on the mound. He allowed two runs on three hits and had one strikeout.

Klupenger came on in relief for two and one-thirds innings. He struck out three and allowed no runs and no hits.

“James and Kash pitched great and really kept us in the game from the mound,” Dierking said.

“We’re young this season. I think I have seven sophomores and freshman playing. We’re all still learning and I think by later in the season we’ll have put it together.”

Four guys that have played a lot of Bulldog baseball are Johnson, Cormany, Haynes and McMillan.

“We lost five seniors who were all starters and played lots of baseball for Lexington. But, we have four guys who are experienced and have played plenty of ball here,” Dierking said.

The season is still young and Dierking is still tweaking his lineup. He says they’ve played six games and had at least four different lineups.

But, he knows Haynes will be at middle infield and Johnson will be pitching or playing first base. And, he’s got Cormany at catcher – a position he’s held for four years.

Two freshman, Cody Rollins and Cash Dierking, will also get in the lineup quite a bit, according to the coach.

As the season moves forward, Dierking believes his team will have to rely on their fielding to win games.

“We’ll have to be solid in the field to win games. Our pitching and sticks are okay, but it will be our fielding that will have to be solid.”

Dierking, in his second season with Lexington, is looking forward to a good season. He has high expectations and is excited to watch his team grow in to a more experienced, more solid ball team by the end of the season.

Lexington was scheduled to travel to Comanche on Tuesday .

They are in the I-35 Classic starting Thursday when they play Minco at 4 p.m. at Wayne.
