Despite win, Lexington looking to get bats going again

Matt Dierking’s baseball team is reeling, the Bulldogs’ runner-up status at the Oklahoma City Invitational Tournament notwithstanding.

Lexington (16-6 overall, 6-1 district) has one hit in its last two games, a 10-0 loss to Marlow on Monday and an 8-1 loss to Oklahoma Christian Academy on Saturday in the tournament title game.

Marlow pitcher Hudson Morgan, an Oklahoma State signee, no-hit the Bulldogs, who had more errors (six) than hits (one) against OCA, leading to five unearned runs.

Lexington also committed six errors in an 11-2 loss to Asher on March 31.

“We can’t field the baseball, and we can’t hit the baseball,” Dierking told The Register on Tuesday. “Complacency is the only thing I can think of. Maybe its pitching, maybe people are just better than we thought or we’re not as good as we were. Something’s going on.”

Since starting the season 7-0, Lexington has gone 9-6 with three wins coming against inexperienced tournament teams from Millwood, Capitol Hill and Putnam City by a combined score of 45-5.

Dierking pulled his starters after one or two innings in those games, and JV players “got a lot of work.”

Things figure to get worse before they get better, for Lexington, which was scheduled to host Marlow — the No. 2 overall team in the state — on Tuesday.

Then comes another tournament, The Jake 2026, at Velma-Alma that runs Thursday through Saturday.

Dierking’s solution? Players will spend Wednesday, their lone day off, taking batting practice.

“That’s what we’re going to have to do is hit,” he said. “Wednesday’s our only day off this week so we’re just going to hit for a couple of hours and that’s about it, all practice.

“We’ve got a tournament coming up this weekend,” he added. Hopefully that will help.”
