It’s time to hit the diamond again for the Wayne Bulldogs’ baseball team.

Head coach Shane Collins and his team have already picked up two wins, a 10-0 win against Ninnekah last week and a 16-0 win against Wewoka on Monday. They also dropped a 3-2 loss to Wynnewood on Monday.

According to Collins, several key pieces are back for the Bulldogs. Seniors Jaxon Dill and Ty Kemp and juniors Sloan Jackson and Ben Fisher will bring experience and tremendous athletic ability to the field for Wayne.

Dill and Kemp will be on the mound or at third. Sophomore Lane Canfield will be at first, junior Lane Lewis will be at second, freshman Langston McClendon will be at short stop and Jackson will be at catcher, to round out the infield.

“It’s been a blessing to have Lane Canfield and Lane Lewis move in. They will help us out a lot,” Collins said.

Freshman Brody Kemp, Fisher and Duke Moore will handle the outfield.

“Overall we have a good blend of youth and older guys. We have two freshmen that will help us out a lot. Langston McClendon loves baseball maybe more than anyone on the team and he’s a good baseball player to have in the infield.

“And Brody Kemp is newer to baseball but he’s extremely athletic and it will be helpful to have him in the outfield running down fly balls,” Collins said.

Collins believes his team’s strength is their athletic ability and their defense.

“One through nine we’re more athletic than we have been the last couple of years. And, that will help us be more aggressive on the bases. It’s a big plus.

But, he says his team will have to learn to hit the ball better and put the ball in play.

As the schedule gets underway, Collins likes the mix of challenges and new teams on there.

Stonewall is a new team for Wayne to face, but the head coach said they usually have a good team. And, Stratford, Southwest Covenant and Elmore City are always decent clubs.

“I’m hoping our schedule will help us out come time for districts. We’d like to make it out since Wayne hasn’t done that in a while,” Collins said.

Last season Wayne finished 16-10 and were knocked out of Districts by Velma-Alma.

Tuesday’s game with Springer was canceled due to weather and field conditions.

The Bulldogs are scheduled to host Konawa on Thursday and travel to Southwest Covenant on Friday.

They will be in Stratford on Monday.
