Warriors trying to find balance in lineup

Positions still being determined

The Washington Warriors are off to a 5-2 start as they begin defense of their fast-pitch softball title.

After losing a talented senior class, including Skylar Wells, Abby Wood, Daisy Lampkin, Ellie Loveless, Tinley Lucas, Maggie Place and Elly Allison, they’re trying to determine the best fits at positions.

“After graduating the class that we did, we’re trying to find the right pieces,” said Warrior head coach Tylor Lampkin. “We have a different version every day. We’re going to look really good some days and not as good on other days.”

Olivia Palumbo and Emjay Lucas have been primarily handling the pitching duties.

Daphne Palumbo and Bree McHughes have been rotating at catcher.

“The catchers are good and learning each day,” Lampkin said. “They’re handling the load and they’re calling pitches.”

Addy Larman and Alexis Gay have been playing first base, as well as Emjay Lucas.

Reese Schrader and Bailey Hyde have been playing second base.

Breanna Lindert has been playing shortstop and Halle Andrews has been on third base.

“Halle has been really good at third base,” Lampkin said. “I’m really proud of her there and for her leadership role.”

The outfielders have been consistent with Emersyn Massey (left), Ava Salcedo (center) and Shelbie Caveness (right).

“The outfielders have been good in the field and really consistent at the plate,” Lampkin said. “They’re setting the table for us.”

Washington has been putting up runs offensively, including a 20-run output in the win against Casady and 17 runs against Crossings Christian.

Lampkin said he will continue to tinker with the lineup until he finds the right balance.

“Sometimes the best offensive lineup isn’t our best defensive lineup,” Lampkin said.  “But by playoff time we’re going to be ready to roll and make a run at it.”
