Warriors top Purcell

Posted

Chase Allison scored four rushing touchdowns and Washington’s defense stopped Purcell twice inside the 10 yard line to post a 40-27 district victory at Conger Field last Friday night.

Allison scored on runs of one, 38 and twice from two yards out while carrying the ball 26 times for 152 yards against the Dragons.

Kelton Schultz returned an interception 60 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter and Jadon Sanchez loped in from 10 yards out in the fourth period.

“I felt, for the most part, our offensive line did a really good job of run blocking,” head coach Brad Beller said of the Warrior forward wall. “Especially considering they are young and inexperienced and some kids have had to be quarantined.”

Beller was talking about the play of Seth Tague, Luke Steele, Austin Smith, Rope Scott, Tanner Winlock and Caleb Bruce.

“And I thought our sophomore quarterback Jaxon Hendrix was efficient. We told him he didn’t have to win the game passing just help us move the ball down the field,” Beller said.

Hendrix was 10-14 for 151 yards.

“With the exception of one interception, I was proud of his poise and confidence,” the coach said. “And I thought Chase Allison played very, very physical. He has a physical brand of running the football. He had a great game.”

On the defensive side of the ball Beller said it was a breath of fresh air to have linebackers Layne Spaulding and Jake Wells back. Both had missed games and their return bolstered the Warrior defense.

“They just played about half of the game but they were our two leading tacklers,” Beller said. “It was great to have them back.”

Wells led the team with seven stops and forced a fumble near the goal line to thwart a Purcell drive.

“That was a big play,” Beller noted.

Spaulding had five tackles.

“Even though we gave up a bunch of yards in the passing game, I felt like they did a good job of controlling the run game,” the coach said.

Due to COVID quarantine issues at Bethel, Washington’s 2020 homecoming tilt with the Wildcats has been moved from Friday night to 3 p.m. Saturday. The coronation ceremony will take place at 2:30 p.m. The homecoming parade will be held Friday at 2:50 p.m.

“They have some kids that will get out of quarantine but not until after Friday,” Beller said. “These kids have suffered enough so we felt like if moving the game back one day will allow them to play why not?

Beller said Bethel will air it out from their spread offensive formation.

“They throw it, throw it, throw it,” the coach said. “We’ve got to get some kinks worked out after the Purcell game. We’ll have to do a good job of tackling in space.”

When the Wildcats are on defense they will base out of a 4-3.

“They have a very, very active front seven on defense. They are very aggressive and very athletic.

“They play with a lot of aggression and it’s not that they blitz that much. They just know what they are doing and get there in a hurry,” Beller said.

The Wildcats are 3-1 on the season.

Warrior notes:

Washington Head Coach Brad Beller nominated Chase Allison as the Offensive Player of the Week.

Allison rushed 26 times for 152 and four touchdowns in Washington’s victory over Purcell.

Getting the nod as the Offensive Lineman of the Week is Rope Scott, who graded out at 87 percent against the Dragons.

Beller nominated Jake Wells as the Defensive Player of the Week.

Wells forced a fumble and finished the night with seven tackles.

Titus Cline was nominated as the Defensive Lineman of the Week. He registered four tackles last Friday night.
