Undefeated 6-0 tournament champions

The Washington Warrior softball team ploughed through the field, going 6-0, to win the Silo fast-pitch softball tournament over the weekend.

They leaned on dominate pitching and hot bats to cruise to the winner’s circle on Saturday.

Washington gave up a total of six runs, including two shutouts, while posting 44 runs for themselves.

“I was super proud of our pitching all the way around,” Warrior head fast-pitch softball coach Tylor Lampkin said. “I really challenged them. We were giving up too many free bases, too many walks. I told them to throw in the zone a little more and let us play defense behind them. It helps not giving up bases.”

The combination of pitchers Olivia Palumbo and Ava Salcedo was too much for opposing offenses.

Red Oak

Palumbo pitched a one-hitter against Red Oak, striking out six along the way, during the Warriors’ 17-0 win. She allowed no walks.

She backed up her pitching with a two-run homer in the first inning. She also hit a double while going 2-2 in the game.

The Warriors hung seven runs on the Eagles in the first inning and 10 in the second inning.

Salcedo tripled in the second inning, knocking in Shelbie Caveness.

Addy Larman was 2-2 with three RBIs.

“Shelbie Caveness, Ava Salcedo and Addy Larman had a solid weekend at the plate, Lampkin said. “They didn’t strike out much and we saw some good pitching.”

Daphne Palumbo and Kinzlee Pogue also had doubles in the game.

Latta

Salcedo got the nod as the starter against Latta for their 5-2 win.

She went four innings, striking out two, before Palumbo finished the last inning. She struck out two batters as well.

Bree McHughes was 2-2 at the plate with a triple and an RBI.

Neither team scored in the first inning but they both got on the board in the second – Washington with two runs and Latta with one. Washington added two more in the third and another in the fourth.

Ripley

Palumbo had nine Ks and only one walk during the Warriors’ 10-0 win over Ripley.

Daphne Palumbo, Julie Hoehner and Olivia Palumbo all hit doubles.

Salcedo was 1-2 with a couple RBIs.

Tishomingo

Salcedo fanned eight batters in four innings during the 2-1 win over the Indians.

Palumbo finished the final inning with two more Ks.

Ava Grimes scored on a passed ball in the second inning and Hoehner knocked in Caveness in the third inning to give Washington the lead for good.

Silo

Washington beat Silo twice (2-1 and 8-2) on Saturday to claim tournament gold.

Salcedo pitched five innings with six Ks in the first game.

Palumbo struck out four batters in five innings in the second game.

Daphne Palumbo was 3-3 and scored twice in that game, as did Caveness.

Lampkin said it’s been an interesting run for him as he’s tinkered with the lineup.

“I’ve felt like it’s been a weird year and a different year,” he said. “We’ve played 25 games and had probably 25 lineups. Everyone is getting opportunities and I’m whittling it down to who we want in for our Playoff run.”

Washington, now 23-2, will travel out of state this weekend to Branson, Mo. for a tournament.

“I’m really proud of this bunch because they’ve been resilient all year,” Lampkin said. “They’ve handled it so well having a different role every day. That can be hard for a high school kid but they’ve done a great job with it.”

Notes

The Washington junior varsity team also competed in Silo last weekend.

They defeated Colbert and Tishomingo.
