Lexington to Crooked Oak for District tournament

Last week was tough as the Lexington Bulldogs dropped their three games. Tuesday night was a 83-62 loss at Casady, Thursday was a 57-47 loss to Davis and Friday night was a 50-47 loss to Dibble.

“It was a tough week for sure. It’s hard to get prepared for games when you have three in one week,” head coach Kyle Wells said.

Dibble

Friday night’s game with Dibble went to the wire as the Bulldogs lost by three points.

“Both teams played really hard on defense and Dibble did a good job not letting Ty (Mixon) have any open looks,” Wells said.

Zeke Faulkenberry and Drew Dierking led Lexington scoring with 12 points each. Colt Mixon added six and Reagan Smith had five.

“As a team we did not shoot the ball very well but our defense kept us in the game.”

According to Wells, with Lexington down three with just seconds remaining, Faulkenberry got off a potentially game-tying three point attempt but the shot didn’t fall.

Davis

Thursday night the Bulldogs hosted Davis in a hard-fought game.

It was a back and forth game with each score by quarter nearly identical. Lexington held a 22-20 halftime lead.

“We came out cold after halftime. We couldn’t get shots to fall and we had the majority of our turnovers in the third quarter. That’s never a good combination,” Wells said.

“We started making shots in the fourth quarter but never really recovered from the third quarter.”

Ty Mixon was the Bulldogs’ leading scorer with 13 points. Faulkenberry and Dierking each added 12.

Casady

Last Tuesday night, Lexington dropped a game with Casady.

“That was a tough game. We struggled at the beginning to make shots and Casady came out on fire. Especially their point guard; he had 25 first-half points,” Wells said.

Lexington was down 23-9 after one quarter, but battled back and nearly matched Casady’s second quarter scoring 29-21.

The second half was much closer, as Lexington outscored Casady 22-21.

“The team was resilient and never gave up. They settled down after the first quarter and kept it close from then on.”

Dierking was Lexington’s leading scorer with 18 points. Faulkenberry was close behind with 17 while Mixon had 15.

The Bulldogs host Purcell on Friday night and will travel to Little Axe next Tuesday to round out their regular season schedule.

The District tournament is late next week. Lexington will go to Crooked Oak. They will play the Rufnex at 7:30 p.m. Saturday February 17.

“They are really athletic and fast. They want to play at their pace. If we can keep the game at our pace and play to our potential on both ends of the court, we have a chance at winning a District title. We are excited for the challenge!”

Girls

Last Friday, Lexington’s Lady ‘Dawgs were in Dibble, but they fell to the Lady Demons 59-45.

Addi Lippel and Mackenzie Manuel were the leading scorers with 19 and 14, respectively.

Dibble jumped out 12-8 after the first quarter, but Lexington turned  up the offense and outscored Dibble, 19-8 in the second. Lexington had a 27-20 lead at halftime.

But, Dibble was on fire in the third, outscoring Lexington 26-8 and then 13-10 in the fourth to notch the win.

Abby Sample added six points for Lexington.

Davis

Thursday night, Lexington dropped a game with Davis, 35-29.

It was a low-scoring affair with Lexington outscoring Davis in the first quarter 4-2, but Davis had 13 to Lexington’s two in the second quarter.

The Lady ‘Dawgs’ offense picked up in the second half as they scored 22 to Davis’ 20, but the second quarter deficit was too hard to overcome.

Manuel was the leading scorer for Lexington with eight points. Lexie Torres had seven and Kiely Givens added six.

Casady

Last Tuesday night, the Lady ‘Dawgs played tough and picked up the 56-55 overtime win over Casady.

Three girls were in double figures for Lexington. Sample had 14 while Lippel and Manuel had 12 apiece. Natalie Dicksion added six points.

Casady held a 32-24 halftime lead, but Lexington outscored the Lady Cyclones 25-17 in the second half. With the score knotted at 49-49 at the end of the fourth, the game was headed to overtime.

Lexington edged Casady 7-6 in the extra period to get the win.

With just two games left in the regular season, Lexington is looking to pick up a win over Purcell on Friday and Little Axe next Tuesday.

District assignments are out and the Lady ‘Dawgs will be in Crooked Oak to take on the Lady Rufnex. They will play at 6 p.m. on Saturday February 17.
