43-42 overtime win over Verden

Posted

Last week the Lexington Lady ‘Dawgs picked up the overtime 43-42 win over Verden to win the Consolation in the Grady County tournament.

“Verden is long and tough and thankfully Abby Sample had a big game. We played hard,” head coach Jacobi Couch said.

Verden got an and-1 to put the game into overtime. Kiely Givens was fouled late and knocked down her two free throws to take the lead.

Then, according to the coach, Sample blocked a late Verden shot to get the Lexington win.

“We overcame adversity and it showed our growth as a team,” Couch said.

Rush Springs

On Friday, Lexington got a 47-35 win over the Lady Redskins.

Sample led her team with 23 points while Addi Lippel joined her double figures with 15.

“Abby and Addi are a great one-two punch when they’re firing at the same time,” Couch said.

Rush Springs held a 27-21 halftime lead. But the third quarter was all Bulldogs as Lexington outscored Rush Springs 19-3.

“We had our way in the third quarter. Abby and Addi played fast and tough and helped us get the lead.”

Lexington outscored Rush Springs 7-5 in the fourth to keep their lead and get the win.

Earlier in the week, Lexington fell to Dibble, 56-40, in their first game of the tournament.

Wynnewood

Last Tuesday Lexington picked up a 20-point, 56-36, win over Wynnewood.

Eleven girls scored in the win, led by Mackenzie Manuel’s 10 points and Lippel’s eight.

“We really struggled at first, but pulled it together to get a good team win. Everyone contributed to give us a good team win and some momentum for a late push as we near the postseason,” Couch said.

Lexington was scheduled to be in Davis on Tuesday night and host Little Axe on Friday.

Boys

Last Friday and Saturday the Bulldogs finished out their run in the Grady County Tournament with losses to Minco (88-60) and AmPo (65-42).

Earlier in the week, the Bulldogs picked up a 56-33 win over Dibble in their first game of the tournament.

A slow first quarter put the Bulldogs in an early hole against Minco. They were outscored all four quarters and fell by 28.

Drew Dierking (30), Zeke Faulkenberry (14) and Ty Mixon (12) were all in double figures in the loss.

The AmPo game was close in the first quarter with Lexington down 20-16 after the first stanza. But, shots were not falling and the Bulldogs were outscored the rest of the way.

Dierking led the team with 15 points. Faulkenberry and Colt Mixon added six apiece.

Wynnewood

Last Tuesday, Lexington picked up a lopsided, 70-47, win over Wynnewood.

Faulkenberry had a team-high 17 points. Skylar Rollins was in double figures also, with 15. Ty Mixon added 12 and Dierking had nine.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 36-14 halftime lead.

Wynnewood and Lexington’s third and fourth quarter scoring was nearly identical as Lexington pulled out the 23-point win.

The Bulldogs were in Davis on Tuesday night and will host Little Axe on Friday.
